OK!
There seems to be a lot of Baja knowledge on this forum. I hope someone can offer some advice on suitable tires for cycling in Baja.
I'm heading down to Baja in late January for a short two week trip. I'll be flying into Loreto and making my way down to San Jose Del Cabo for my flight back to Victoria, BC. A friend of mine has cycled parts of baja twice "www.miteymiss.com".
I hope I can ask a question or two. My main experience is touring with dedicated touring road bikes, almost entirely on paved roads. In the last few years I've started using a well used mountain bike (Specialized Hardrock) and decked it out for touring. I've done the Kettle Valley Railway from Castlegar to Hope on the original knobbies and then toured with city slicks in Cuba. Now I've switched to Schwalbe Marathons and simply love them. I've used those in Belize and Guatemala, including a bit of dirt/gravel. But I'm wondering what would be a more suitable tire for the Baja area. It'll be about 50% pavement and 50% on dirt roads. A bit around Loreto/Mulege. Then near La Paz and down to Cabo via the East Cape. I understand there are some sandy spots and I distinctly remember doing a face plant fully loaded on some sandy "road" in Cuba in 2005 :eek:
I live in Victoria, BC and the lack of supplies, bicycling and otherwise, is pretty limited so any quick advice would be greatly appreciated in case I need to order or head over to Vancouver for a shopping spree.
