Bicycle Mechanics - New Cranks Arm Weird Fit + Blonde Moment...

New Cranks Arms:
I installed some new Shimano crank arms to replace my stripped out Truvativ's... Everything went fine with removal, and installation, except for one thing. The new cranks are not aligned with the front dérailleur (~1mm out of spec of the crank arms), so is this 'normal'? The cranks are tightened up very well (square tapered BB), so I highly doubt there is any room left for them to move closer to the frame... I did do a test ride, and they feel solid... I have no issues realigning the front / rear dérailleurs, I just want to make sure that I've mounted the cranks correctly before spending 30 minutes aligning the dérailleurs (yah I know... I'm slow at adjustments).

Blonde Moment:
Without using my head I also bought a set of pedals thinking that I had damaged the threads on my old ones. So I was trying to screw in my old drive side pedal into my none drive crank arm, and guess what; it wasn't screwing in. I bought some new pedals, and an hour later realized that I really wasn't thinking straight. Anyways, will I have any kind of issues returning them to my LBS? Besides getting laughed at, do you think it's proper LBS etiquette to do such things? (still in the original packaging)

Crankarms - some cranks are simply wider than others (called the "Q-factor" for some reason). Generally speaking a narrower set is more desirable than a wide one, but it's an individual thing. The centerline of the chainrings is also variable. There is no standard for chainline but there is a "reasonable range". It sounds like the new cranks within the reasonable range.

Returning pedals - as long as the pedals or any of the parts/manuals/box aren't damaged, I think returning them shouldn't be a problem. If you shredded the box opening it up, then it's not so easy. The shop has be be able to resell the item - if you return it in an unsaleable state they won't be able to sell it. Therefore they'll probably refuse to refund you the money. If you're a regular there then it might be possible - you'd burn up a lot of favors doing it. If you're not a regular then it could get difficult.

Yah I didn't open up the pedals, so they're still brand spaken new with all original wrappings; so I'm hoping for the best. Store credit is just as good.
