I'm on the Easton side of Columbus, and ride the Alum Creek trail, Olentangy trail and 3 Creeks trail which doesn't quite join the Northern Alum Creek trail, about a 3 mile gap from Easton Ball Fields and Ohio Domincan College.

I live on the NorthSide and commute to Worthington everyday, rain or shine. My car broke down in June so I'm preparing to ride this winter. I've been stocking up on winter gear, finding good deals on-line and at home. I just bought a pair of Manzella mittens at TJ Max for $20. We'll see how they work out.

I went out for a short ride today to the grocery store. 40f NW12. Took a leisurely ride up the bikepath in Westerville and then rode back down thru town. I had the streets all to myself. Very relaxing. I wanted to try my winter gear. I just had on my SportHill jacket and 3SP pants which were very comfortable in these temps. I picked up a pair on Manzella Mittens at TJ Max, which were totally windproof. Those will be nice in the cold temps. I'm curious to see how the Snow Sneakers will do in the frigid stuff. They're rated down to -5f. With temps at 40f they were just the thing. Oh well, time to enjoy Thanksgiving, same to ya.

4:30am 28f very comfortable with my winter gear on. I just wore leggings over work pants, so the waist area got a little nippy, not too bad tho. Snow Sneakers and Mittens did the trick. The only thing was my rear derailluer froze up and I couldn't shift out of the gear I was in. I'll have to do some maintenance on it to fix that. Probably just needs some fresh grease inside the cable housing. Afternoon ride home was nice. 39f. Derailluer was shifting. Had the Bikepath all to myself.

Im in the downtown area.. love riding around downtown @ night but the pavement isn't always the greatest. Anyone frequent the bike path that goes from confluence to around tuttle park?

The prelude to winter was a big eye-opener for me. As this is the first winter that I'll be commuting. The Schwalbe Snow Studs are junk. They didn't work as advertised, even on the hard pack stuff. I wouldn't trust them. I was very careful, particularly when turning. I'm going with the Nokians like I should have. The clothing I had worked to a charm. I was very comfortable in the 15f weather that I rode in. My outer shell is a Showers Pass rainjacket(can't say enough great things about this jacket). Under that I wear a SportHill Traveller jacket. The lower half, I wear my work pants with leg warmers. This worked at 15f. My waist area got a little nippy. Anything colder and I would probably add my rainpants to block the cold. I'm looking at Snow pants for the frigid stuff. On my feet, I wear LLBean Snow Sneakers. At 15f they kept my feet comfortable. The toes got cold at the end of my 40min commute. But I think that had more to do with the normal work socks I wear. A mid-weight sock, I feel would solve that. And on top I have a Louis Garneau helmet cover(from Performance,$17) thin balaclava w/polarfleece headband for the ears and goggles. The goggles I wear are Visorgogs that fit over my eveglasses. I didn't want to spend a whole lot of $$ on ski goggles. And these give me a wider field of vision. Goggles really make a difference in the cold stuff. They're like having a little windshield. They keep your face warm and protect you from the elements. I did have a problem with them fogging up. But I used the old Scuba Diving trick of using spit to coat the inside and this seemed to work out OK. I'm a little antsy with the thought of January and February looming in the near distant future. But I'm bound and determined to ride everyday. I figure if folks in Canada and Alaska can do it, then I can do it. Thanks to the advice I get on BikeForums and other Blogs gives me encouragement. I keep chanting, "One day at a time."

I live the far south side and have enjoyed riding at Three Creeks. Winter and being dark at 5:30 has stopped me from riding during the week. Something that works great for me is a pair of winter golf gloves. They have a great grip and are windproof and not that expensive.

Ridin' in this morning I was expecting to wake up to a downpour. Instead it was just a light mist, still put on my rainpants. Good thing, cause I was pretty damp when I got to work. This aftn I did my three-trails ride home. I did a portion of the Olentangy Bikepath, Sharon Woods, and home via the Alum Creek trail. Didn't see anyone on any of the paths. In between I stopped at the bank in Worthington and a lady in there commented about how it was a little cold to be riding. I told her "it was good for you". She comes back with "Oh, I know". As if she's done it before. More rain expected tom'rw.

I,m stuck up here in Cleveland but hope to visit relatives and try that Hocking River bikeway to the east of you this winter.Not a more scenic place on the planet.
Tried to sell cycling to my kids at Ohio State,but had little success.

Columbus sucks.. I havent rode in over a week so I bought a trainer off ebay last night.

Ya I saw that sight. I didn't know if you had to be associated with a club or jsut show up. I also ride with the COTT group http://www.cott.us/ when I can. They are planning a New Years Day Ride as long as the weather isn't to bad.

Wow! What a contrast compared to what we've had the last few weeks. Temps in the 60's. Had a nice tailwind ridin' home this aftn. Lots of folks out enjoying the balmy temps. Came upon the Olentangy Bikepath as I crossed the river on 161 and saw a biker all decked out in his riding gear. Where was he last Wed when we had 4" of snow. You don't need no stinkin' trainer, get some gear and ride in the cold!!

As for Bikin Bob's rides, you do not have to be a member of the Ohio Randonneurs, just need to show up. The rides have multiple mileage options and I saw a good mix of ability levels on the last one I did. Bob usually throws in some good hills so you wont get to cold either! ;)

The COTT people are mostly triathlon people but all levels of bike riders show for the rides. They have weekly 30 to 35 mile no drop rides in the nicer weather for all levels. Weekend are more 50 to 100 mile rides. All over Columbus area and Granville. Nice routes out there.

Olentangy Bike Path

Does anybody know how to get from the Northmoor Park parking lot to the trail after you have to use the streets to get to Clinton Como Park. What street do you use to get back on the trail?

Hi, I am out here too, in the Worthington area. I am in extreme need of motivation--I have a strong hibernation gene, I think, & haven't been on the bike for weeks. Mostly ride any & all of the bike paths, like long rides & would like to try some off-trail routes outside of the city. I need to connect with some other riders of my ability level -- I will check out those websites mentioned above....

Rode this morning. 27f. Not bad. This aftn on the way home I rode thru Sharon Woods. I saw another hearty soul out riding, with a few walkers. The Park is nice this time of year. Very quiet. The woods are nice with the bare trees and leaves on the ground. Supposed to get more cold temps this week. Dress up and Ride!

I had the day off today. I still went out and did some running around. Switched to the snow studs. Rode up the Alum Creek bikepath all the way up to Giant Eagle on Maxtown Rd. The path was un-plowed but the riding was good. I probably could have done without the studs. But I figure if the only time I put knobbies on the bike is for snow then I may as well have studs on them. After all, most of the time your on snow you have to deal with slick spots and hard pack. The weather wasn't too bad. When I left around 11am it was 18f. But according to the thermometer on my bike it had warmed up to about 22f-25f. On the way back, once in town I moved over to State St. and rode thru town to let the cagers know what they were missing.

Hooray! for sunshine. The snow is melting,at least on the roads. Which means I can go back to my road tires. I really dread riding on the Studs. Feels as if I'm pulling a load on the bike. Looks like we're having our typical up-and-down weather pattern. But its still early in the winter season. Not looking forward to what Feb. has to offer. Getting used to this winter ridin' thing.

I'm in Columbus too.

I commute 14 miles every day from Hilliard to downtown and have only missed 3 days since July5th. I see a number of other commuters so I know there are a number of us out there.

I talked to one who commutes Plain City to OSU. I think he said he was getting close to 50 miles a day. Then there is this older (looking) gentleman who has legs of steel. I can keep up with him for a while but he just spins a little faster and eventually drops me. I talked to him briefly and he's been doing this for 15 years. Makes me feel a little better.

Come on... Suck it up and get out there. Layer the clothes and after the first mile or so it's not bad. Watch the wind chill. At 9 degrees a week or so ago it was a little hard on the nose.

I'm here in Columbus too. Live in Dublin, work at OSU. I commute a couple days each week - about 27 miles RT. Too many roller miles lately and not enough on the road.

Got out yesterday (Sat.) for 24 miles. New Albany to Grandville and back. Great weather.
