Redrock Canyon

I was in Vegas a couple of weeks ago and took a drive to Redrock Canyon. Beautiful scenery, great roads...and lots of bikes. It was 75 degrees and I was very envious. But how on earth do you handle the summer heat? 100+, geez, I think I'll stay in Seattle.

Rode Red Rock in August. I have to say this was the most amazing ride of my life. As for the heat, yeah it's warm but you ride early in the morning (get into the park by 7:30). It's actually this ride that got me into cycling. "Let me explain, no there is too much, let me sum up." I had never ridden a road bike till I went to Vegas and rented a caad 9 from a great local shop (Shameless plug for Mcghies) and got sucked into a "beginner" ride at 6:30 in the morning. I was told that that I would be able to make it to park entrance no problem and then I should turn back. Once I got there we decided to do the loop. It was incredible. 4 (Hellish) miles of uphill and the rest slowly down. As soon as I got back home I picked up my first road bike and I've loved every second of it. I can't recommend Red Rock enough. Just go early and bring LOTS of Water.

I checked out your ride....awesome, looks like you all had a lot of fun. I wish I could've rode.

My wife and I went to Red Rock Sunday 4th, not sure the time, 2-3pm maybe, and saw quite a few cyclists on hwy 159 coming back, certainly made me want to ride.

I go to Vegas every year for the Sema convention show. I'm there all week and usually spend the weekend. Next year, maybe I'll give you a shout.

I was just poking my head in my region and saw this. I live in vegas and I know how it is. The worst part in my mind is going from 110+ to 50 degrees in less then 2 weeks. But hey you just get use to it. Good luck if you come out here. I race BMX at the Boulder City track. Just in case anyone else does. :)

Greetings from the East Coast ... I'm going to be in Vegas March 22 -- 25. I was thinking of renting a bike and doing some riding on the 23rd or 24th. Do any of you have a suggestion on Bike rentals? I assume from what I'm reading here that the Red Rock Loop is what I'd want to give a go??

McGhies Bicycle shop will rent you a bicycle...they did a great job for me. Just give em a call and they'll set you up! They even have group rides that leave from the shop.

It's funny... I have lived in Las Vegas my entire life and in the last couple years have probably ridden over 500 miles, but not once have I ridden the Redrock Loop. I have driven it several times, and it is gorgeous, but that uphill climb seems so daunting.

I currently live about half a mile south of the bottom end of the Downtown to Redrock route, and have ridden that all the way up to Desert Foothills (in jeans, no less) which comes to about 10 or 11 miles (but about a quarter mile vertically) at least ten times.

Your post right there has inspired me to do that ride. I now know what I'll be doing this Saturday morning. The weather has been gorgeous lately (high of about 75 with no wind), so i really don't have any excuse not to.

I've never rode the RR loop, but just living in Vegas you either get use to the heat or you stay inside. No matter what you're doing outside it's crammed down our throats every summer to stay hydrated (great advise, I'm just tired of it after 20 years), so very active persons usually have more than enough water with them when outdoors.
