Planned to take the pup out for a walk, then come back and do an hour on the road.
It is SOoooooo blamed foggy out... It's misting and I can barely see my hand in front of my face.
Ergo, the pup got hers but the ride gets scotched (heyyyy, there's an idea... :))

I get so bummed and restless when I don't get "enough" miles in during the week.
They're saying rain on Saturday; if I don't get my Saturday ride then I'll really be blue :(

It's like a drug.

Bummer, I got to do a 36 kilometer group ride in Kansas City. No fog, but it was 6 degrees C out when we started. And all you need to do is follow the Dead - "Hang it up and see what tomorrow brings." and "All a friend can say is ain't it a shame." Truckin' is just full of meaningful insights!

Hmmm, it's like a drug? They're called endorphins. Or so I thought. Turns out that further research has proven that runner's (biker's) high comes from anandamide. Endorphins are oipiod neuropeptides and anadamide is similar to THC. Curiouser and curiouser.

So if marijuana is illegal and strenuous exercise causes the body to release chemicals similar to the active ingredient in marijuana then strenuous exercise is...

When I don't feel like cycling I run instead like I did last night. I was just too lazy last night to go through the ritual of putting on my cycling gear. With running, I'm out the door in 2 minutes and back within the hour.....not to mention the level of workout I get in just a short period of time compared to riding. This way I don't feel guilty for skipping a ride. :)

Ah, so few share in my misery...

You're not alone:(

We didn't do the usual Friday morning ride since it was 28F with wind-chills into the lower 20's. I do plan on riding Sunday morning and possibly join some friends for a ride Saturday afternoon. The temperatures were in the mid 60's earlier this week and it just takes me a little while to adjust to the colder weather.

I have to admit that it has been 3 weeks since my last ride. Too busy of late and I haven't gotten out of my funk from Daylight Savings Time ending. I have gotten in a few long walks though, which are not as much exercise but perhaps even more de-stressing than a ride for me.

No weekday rides is making me crankier than normal. I'm concentrating on long rides on the weekends, but the family is starting to complain that it is conuming too much time.

In years past I would have been done by now. Last year I bought the trainer, it kept me on the bike through most of the winter but it was indoors and maybe only twice a week. Since I ski on the weekends I kept in good shape. Most years I would get little or no exercise during the week and slowly loose fitness over the winter to where I had to start over (6 mile rides) in the spring.

This season I am still on the bike outside on the weekend and sneaking out at lunch time during the weeek if the weather and schedule permit. I vow to get 3 days during the week either on the trainer or outside, most mornings it has been up at 5:30AM. I will not go outside if there is ice on the road though - not ready for that yet, but I think I am prepared for extremely cold temps, so far the coldest this year has been 25 and I dressed successfully for it.

This is new to me - after the big rides in Sept my fitness declined, but in the past three weeks since I started this routine I am getting back to where I was. I doubt I could pull off a full century but feel confident I could roll through a metric now. The big thing is that I have not resigned myself to let the weather get the better of me. I get so depressed and cranky if I am not getting enough exercise that my work suffers and I am sure my family life suffers as well.

Ah, so few share in my misery...

Tell you what, lets swap miseries for 6 months apiece.

Here in Bahrain, it's 85 degrees and low humidity now. It'll stay this way until about February 2008. I just got back from a late afternoon 60 km, on the new bike whose paint job is PERFECT - no debate there please, you'll only regret it.

But if you want to swap, it gets up to 120 and high humidity about next March and the temperature climbs thereafter. We have a little house in Santa Cruz that we don't see enough of, you come here and I'll go there, April to October? - Swap? I'll look after your puppy!

120 degrees?!?!?!!?
No, not for me... I am a coastal boy.
You have a house in Santa Cruz so you understand I'm sure.
And no way am I giving up my little Roxie dog. Nuh-uh

Roxie - we deserve pictures!

I hope to be in Santa Cruz just to see our tenant and to ensure the house is in good shape, late December or early new year - any chance of saying hello?

I suppose we could both ride to San Gregorio and meet up there?

Hey! You want Roxie pictures, you get Roxie pictures! :D

3 weeks off the bike because you're "too busy"?

Unless you're an astronaut or a submariner, your priorities are seriously screwed up...just sayin'.

Sweet. I mean. SWEET

Have you already informed her about the difference in emphasis between the Hendrix and the Clapton interpretations of "Angel"? I expect so - she looks like a Hendrix dog to me

What a lovely family member ;)

Funny, we do call her our Angel Doggus ("Doggus" being a Zappa-ism)
And she most definitely would be more a Hendrix dog than a Clapton dog.

Well, I have so few opportunities to ride, now that clock has changed. It is dark by the time I get home every weekday. I've been traveling two of the past 4 weekends. On the other two, I had to catch up on winterizing the home.

It is hard to ride at 6:30PM, in the dark, on a leaf-covered gravel rail trail where it is hard to see rocks, ruts, branches, walnuts, etc, hiding under the leaves. And it's been windy with temps in the 35-40 range.

Thus it has been much easier to take walks. :(

Well, traveling sucks...it's usually impossible to bring the bike (that's one reason I've taken up running - you can do that anywhere...as long as you don't get injured ).

What about AM rides?

And if you have access to trails, those can be ridden in the dark with a good headlight (e.g., Dinotte 200 or 600). It's a whole new experience riding in the dark.

As for "temps in the 35-40 range" - you're from Wisconsin...man up and deal with it! :D

Technically, I could squeeze in an hour in the AM, but I'll admit that I'm not an early morning person. I don't like to get up before 7:30. I got my office hours changed from 8-5 to 9-6, as I never got there by 8 anyway.

I'm thinking about trying a night ride, but not with any significant candlepower. I have two 3-watt LED flashlights that I will strap on my handlebar. As I would likely be riding at no more than 10 mph, I don't need the throw that someone riding at 18-20 on a road would need.

I love this forum.

My plan for the winter is to ride 3 days a week (my days off) so I can avoid the cold and dark by going later in the morning. On rainy days, I'll hop on the trainer. The 4 work days will consist of morning aerobic workouts of various kinds, a 1 hour walk at lunch, and strength training and yoga workout in the evenings. No big training goals in the winter, just maintenance. No use fighting the season. Just go with it.

All my good intentions suffered a reverse this week. Didn't go out on the bike the last couple of days because the temperature was in the high thirties ... CENTIGRADE.

Normally I don't mind the heat but it's hit hard and early this year and has a tropical edge to it rather than the dry heat I'm used to (just a normal weather pattern, similar to the 40's according to my Dad). Besides, I'm building up a new bike (so my old bike's in bits so it can donate bits ). Come January, we can expect cool changes that will drop the temp in to the low thirties ... with daily MINIMUMs not dropping out of the thirties. Then in February, it gets hot.

So my dog is spending his days being even lazier than usual and I'm not taking him out for rides in his trailer. I hate leaving him home and he hates being left (yes, he hangs out of the window of the car), but there comes a point where it's just silly.

I'm thankful (climate-wise) I live in moderate central CA where the only winter inhibiters to road riding (no MUPs, etc.) are fog and rain. Not much faith in night lights here....the yokels would swerve over the top of me wondering "just whut the hell was that, Earl? Damned UFO's".
