I have a long sleeve new balance running zip top that is light to mid weight. If I was to use that and say a polartec 200 fleece, do you guys think i'll be warm enough and is this effective enough for wicking?
I picked up some performance dot poly pro gloves that I'm planning on using by themselves.
Also, I'm about to pick up a skull cap to line my helmet that will cover my ears. Any thoughts on the material i shoudl go for? Poly pro? coolmax?
thoughts?

In the 40s and 50s yes and maybe too warm.

I'd die with that much polartech at those temps. If you're moving around a lot you need only one layer and a windbreak at most for that weather.

^ wat he said.
40F with a nasty crosswind and 90% humidity is miserable. Dress warm, and have some place to put the extra if you need to take it off. Or put it back on.
The weather prediction for one ride I did was mid fifties. It started snowing. It
would have been nice to have a jacket. As it was one leg went completely numb and useless. I pedaled several miles with one leg.
I highly recommend an Icebreaker merino skullcap- $30 but very nice, I've been using it down to 25 degrees.
