I had a brain wave today (I think). I have recently installed Profile Racing cranks on my SS/FG converted road bike. Being a big guy, and having snapped an aluminum crank before, I appreciate the cro-moly strength and stiffness. I got the MTB version of the cranks which, like the BMX version, has bolt-on spider, which is available in several sizes. I use the 110 BCD one (the others are smaller for BMX, MTB size rings). My idea is this--why not find/make a spider that is 130 BCD, or even better, 144 BCD so that I can run 1/8" chainrings? One set of (expensive) bomb-proof cranks and tons of chainring size choices, just by interchanging the spider. Has anybody seen spiders like this or have any idea of someone who would fabricate this? Or, am I missing something and is this actually a dumb idea? Thanks.
