If you want hilly, do tour of sierra madre. I think it currently leaves wednesdays from Velo Pasadena, probably at 6 pm. I haven't done it in ages, but it used to have a winter route (pre-daylight savings) and summer route (during daylight savings). Hardest group ride I've ever done-- it's usually small enough that you can't hide in the pack and get dragged along. It also used to be way more civilized than montrose (not sure if it still is)-- stopped for lights, regroup points, stopped for flats, etc.

I've always wanted to try this ride. How does it compare (speed, toughness, safety), to the Simi Ride, for those that have done both? thx

the beginning is too slow imo, they need to ramp it up at the start. Too bad its the same route everytime, that area is nice, they should mix it upyou really don't understand race training rides, do you?

I've done both, and I'd say the Montrose Ride is a little easier to keep up with just because it's relatively flat until the very end. The average speed was low 20's, which I imagine gets faster as the season gets underway. I always got dropped shortly after Norwegian Grade on the Simi Ride, so in my opinion the hills do me in on that one.

How does it compare (speed, toughness, safety), to the Simi Ride, for those that have done both? haven't done simi in about 15 years so... ...so montrose is flatter, the hills are mostly short sprinter type hills and come all at the end on the short ride. the long ride you get all of the hills of the short ride plus a few extras. the pace is pretty fast (unless your ovoleg) the group is usually 150 riders plus or minus. have seen pros from toyota-united, rock racing, slipstream, discovery, and a guy that rides for a french continental pro team

I don't think he understands cycling. Oh yeah he can ride 8 miles fast, he can ride more than 100 miles but he has to stop for meals. Don't forget he can swim 1500m. Supposedly he can also play football. To satisfy him I won't report in the "race report" thread because I am "boasting" and that is somehow hypocritical. When I talk about the training ride I am also supposedly "boasting" about "racing" although I always go out and do my pre-planned workout no matter how it affects my position in the ride.
Ovo I am not raged, you remind me of Wesley Snipes's character in "White Men Can't Jump". You talk trash to piss people off. I will bow to your talents as the king of internet trash talking. If I ever see you on a bike you will bow to me as long as your not on the ground because a motorcycle got too close and you overlapped a wheel.

The Grandview finish, which has been used in the past and is currently being used is the longest climb and is the only one that is over about 2 min. It is not really a sprinter type hill since you are climbing for about 8 min. I've ridden it in the small ring a few times this winter.

redal, I have to say everybody around, including Oleg, knows the score between you and Oleg. I know a lot of people enjoy hearing yours and others race and training reports. I don't even race and I enjoy them and sometimes pick up some tips. So, I am asking, don't stop your chatting because Oleg rants. He is just playing and no one takes him seriously.

socal, you don't need to change the patches at all. They will outlast the tube itself. <grin>

I was there, and I saw Bigdraft. Will and Jeff were there as well, along with some guy named Brad I met while commuting a few months ago. Mercx89, this is probably a stupid question, but what bike were you on and what jersey? I was on the debadged Litespeed in plain blue... not to be confused with the blue/black jersey on the Cannondale that couldn't hold a line and learned how to rub shoulders as a result.

I couldn't clip in fast enough after a light, and that apparently annoyed another rider enough that was caught behind me to teach me how to rub shoulders as he went by. :)
The ride today was the first time I've ridden with a group, and I had a blast. Then again, and according to Will, the ride doesn't start until the road pitches up towards the end (where I ended up being dropped), so maybe I didn't do the ride after all? :D
Thanks again Will for getting me out there and for all the pointers. Can't wait until next week.

I kinda like living at the moment.yeah, i've mentioned it a couple of times. the 8:00 group leave tj's in so pas and does the long route (although some go short) and mostly rides a double paceline at a reasonable pace. it mostly runs in the winter with about 40 or so riders. anyone can go. there is one or two coaches there with their riders. when the coaches and their riders stop showing up the the early rides they kinda die out.
do the ride a few more time and you'll get used to the traffic situations

01-26-08, 01:02 AM
Oh, I'm used to the traffic situations. I just still don't like it. I know it's kind of a necessity with that large of a group, but I still don't like giving drivers one more reason to hate us. I will say that most drivers seem very understanding when the first 10-20 get through and wait while the rest of the 100-200 follow in the yellow and red. Drivers in Simi are not as patient.
