I took my new bike for its first ride today (24 miles) I have been using an oversized Peugeot Carbolite with 7 gears only (large front cainring bent) so I got to a good hill and kinda went for it. My computer read 34.4 mph and I was craping myself but it felt great and I was wondering what is the fastest you have gone down a hill and most important..........................how did it feel :D

47 has been the fastest I've gone down a hill. 38 is my top speed on flat ground.

Hit 54 mph on the back side of Monitor Pass at this years Death Ride. Probably could have gone faster but oh well.

41.5 mph, finally had to use brakes, due to curves. Hills of Bald Knob, KY
91 km/h (56.9 mph) down a very steep semi-residential street. It was quite a rush... but stupid.
Just before that we were in the 80's coming down a mountain. I was more than a little shocked at the gyroscopic energy stored in the wheels as I tried to lean into a gradual hairpin turn.
I don't do that stuff anymore... I've got a mortgage and career to worry about. Now I chicken out at about 60 km/h (37.5 mph).

47. Would have been faster but I chickened out and tapped the brakes.

103 km/h on a 3 km straight, nicely paved, trafficless descent in vermont. i don't know the grade, but it was pretty steep, probably around 10 degrees.

Today I hit 46 down a small hill near my home.

There are a few threads like this...
I hit my max on my last tour... 70 km/h on a kilometer long 9% downhill with a loaded tourer. I did break a lot because the descent had quite a few turns and let go when I could see where the road was leading.
37 - 38 MPH on a hill near my house. Felt pretty good. :-)

45, yesterday, up in the Western Finger Lakes region of NY.
nice!
One time coming down off a mountain I passed a car, he slowed down for a corner, and I cruised by at about 50. The looks of the people in the car were priceless. But my hairiest was coming down a mountain on a federal logging road. I was prob only in the low 40's but because it was dirt, I was using the whole road. If something had come up; I would have been a hood ornament.

I hit 36 on my New Allez the other day... no shakes it was solid well the bike was then I backed off. It is so cool and so amazing to hum along at those speeds. I was on the flats with my buddy and we were doing about 25 and there is no better feeling then hummng along like that. even tho it was for a short time:D

Yeah... this thread topic keeps popping up and I always feel compelled to include the same picture each time. :D

BTW, that was due to stray EMP from traffic sensors. It did confuse me for a bit as I had just come down a steep hill did happen to see my computer reading somewhere in the 40s at one point during the descent.
The fastest I've been on my roadbike was somewhere in the mid-50s while descending a mountain pass. I actually passed a Ferrari that was in the left lane.

Coasting at 48 mph down a local hill on a rural road. But I've never gone up it on that side. It's like a wall. Fortunately, it is in good condition.
BTW, it felt great! With very little traffic in the area, you can really enjoy it.

I hit 53 once. All I can say is that the potholes come up awfully fast at that speed.
15 yrs ago, i got up to 80+km/h...
Now I can hardly go beyond 60kmh.. Road conditions here are not as good as they used to be... Lots of potholes... I cannot risk hitting a pothole at high speed.:(

I've only been up to 40 mph, but then again I'm a newbie.

Went 34.7mph yesterday on a slight downhill grade. Only been on my road bike for a few weeks so I'm sure I'll be picking up some more speed as I continue riding....I'll definately take all the mph I can get!
I hit 48 mph yesterday while glued to the wheel of a tandem. The fastest I have gone on a single is 52 mph and on a tandem I have reached 55 mph.

I was holding back, but I went down a hill and I was going at 66 miles per hour. I saw a crash early on when I was descending, so I thought I'd take it easy. But it was fun!

My friend told me this story of her son going for a bike ride, perfectly innocent, right? WRONG! This little bike ride ended up with a cop!? So the son was going down the hill pretty fast, he doesn't know how fast he was going.... but as cops do, they sit at the bottom of hills to catch people going fast down the hill. Well, that person that was going too fast down the hill was the son on his bike.
The cop pulled out in his car after him.....lights and everything and pulled him over....... ON HIS BIKE!!!!
Cop: "Do you know how fast you were going?"
Son: "No, I don't know, I don't have speedometer on my bike."
Cop: "Try 89 miles per hour!"
I didn't believe it and still don't... but it must be AWESOME to be pulled over by a cop in a car for going too fast on your bike!!!!!!
-Dan the Man-
Wasn't it Bill Cosby who told the story of going down a hill with his friends in go-carts on stolen baby carriage wheels and at the bottom of the hill there were...900 COP CARS!!! Wonder how fast they were going?:D

Here in Florida we don't have many big hills. I have found some places where I can get up in to the 35 mph range though.
Frank
54 mph down the Brockway Grade, past Northstar, on the way to Truckee.
Oh, and I did 44 on a flat the other day, drafting behind a UPS truck.

I'm still trying to get pulled over on the main street of my town.

I know. But then he's still got the road rash from when they stuck a pump in his wheel!

About 10 years ago, I got up to around 50 (assuming the speedo was correctly set up) down a relatively straight stretch of downhill mountain road in NC. As I was screaming (me, not the bike) down the road, I realized that hitting one errant pebble would effectively end my pathetic life. Brakes were applied shortly thereafter. Had to go wash my undies afterward. :D
last weekend, 43 mph (69.2 kph for you non-US readers) down the backside Hawthorne Blvd in Palos Verdes (Los Angeles, CA). there's a stoplight right at the steepest part, and it turned yellow...my friend went through but i had to slam on the brakes. popped another spoke (see my spoke thread...) as i came to a stop, but i seem to have fixed that damn squeaking noise my brakes were making! my friend, who didn't have to stop, got 45 on his speedometer.
how'd it feel? like 'early withdrawal'. :irritated

Hey Folks,
...89 miles per hour on a bicycle? Well, I guess there are people who ski at 130 mph so anything's possible. One point that was not mentioned in anyone's post is what kind of frame you're on. I'd be interested to know, especially with the people hitting the higher speeds (50 mph+). On my old, HEAVY (25 lbs.) steel bike, I could hit 50 with ease. On my new 18 pounder, after 40 mph I get a strange sensation of not being able to feel the road beneath. Also, crosswinds blow me around like a rag doll. Never had these problems on the heavier frame...which is strange because isn't a light-weight bike the ideal? Anyhow, I just returned from some awesome riding upstate (New Paltz, NY). It sure is beautiful up there.

Aegis Aro Svelte (48cm)... weighs in at around 15.5lbs with all the cages and stuff stripped off it. As-ridden with bottle cages, bottles, CO2 inflator, seatpack, etc, it weighs around 17lbs... probably closer to 18lbs with water in the bottles. It's fairly stable at 50MPH but starts to get a little twitchy past 55MPH. I might attribute it to the short stem I'm using (90mm) but I'm planning on pushing to a 100mm soon so that may help a little.

I'm glad I started this, I notice some people riding at 40 mph and above under normal flat cycling, I am amazed as I can just manage 15-17 :( .
Whats the secret :D , you guys must have legs like tree trunks
:roflmao:
Hmmm... Ignorance is bliss sometimes.
I ride street bikes, (crotch rockets for the lay person), and have been in a couple of accidents. I know what higher speeds can do to even a well protected body, (jeans help, but you still get road rash). I hit 48mph on the bicycle a couple of times, but the afterthought of going down is what got to me. I am comfortable at those speeds, but too much can happen which worries me. If I am not racing, then I don't see a need to push it. Just my humble opinion though, .

Methos, I agree, but I'll still stay off of the brakes on a descent. The downhill is the reward for the climb, after all.

There is a hill here, that a person could easily hit mid 50's to 60 mph down. The problem is that it is after a killer set of rolling hills, so I usually am resting when I ride down it. I coast at speeds up to 45 down it though, without pedaling a bit. That was on my Trek 1000. I havent ridden down it on the vigorelli yet.
