General Cycling Discussion - Believe it or not

Guess what happened to me this morning. Well I do alot of cycling as some of you may or may not know. Yea I loove cycling as you can see by my some of my photos/art

Anyways, its kinda cold out here but that dosen't really stop me. I went out for a nice 20mile fast ride. My highlight of the ride was hitting a pickup truck. The best part is how blessed I was. I was riding behind the truck in traffic going about 17-23mph. The truck stopped all of a sudden and I found out cars have way stronger brakes than bikes. I just couldn't stop fast enough so I didn't even try. I slammed into the back of the pickup truck. Good thing I was aligned straight and in a standing position out of the saddle (I always do this for safety when in high traffic areas) because I flipped over, doing a full front flip and landed on my bottom sitting in the cargo bed area of the pickup truck. The bike went flying in the air and landed on the side. Thank God I wasn't hurt at all and my bike only had minor injuries nothing major and no major body work damage(good since is cost about $1,000 USD).

It happened so fast. That was really good it was a truck because if it was a car I dont know where I would have landed.

Great graphics! Sorry to hear about your crash though. To walk away from that with no injuries is surely a blessing!

Thanks, Surpringly it didn't hurt at all, and even though one can't believe it by looking at the picture, but the landing was actually quite neutral (didn't hurt at all).

i can't help but thinking, just imagine he didn't feel you hit/land. you'd have gone for a longer ride than you planned for!

A guy I went to high school with (many, many years ago) was an avid cyclist. The day after he installed his very first bike "speedometer" he went charging down the biggest hill he could find. In top gear, pedaling hard, he was completely focused on watching his speed... until he met the parked car!

He, too, walked away pretty much unscathed. The bike was a write-off. The car had MAJOR damage to the back window, top and hood.

I've often wondered what happened to that guy, as he was well-known for his recklessness. Did he become another Darwin Award nominee, or settle-down?

Anyway, good to hear you're OK.

I have to ask.... how did the driver of the pickup react to the whole thing?

I'll give you a 8.9 you got deductions for not bringing the bike into the truck with you :)

While the OP may be fine now keep in mind that later in the day or the next day ones body tends to start complaining. I endoed over a tree that had fallen in the bike path and I felt just fine.
Later that day my left foot went insane (pinched nerve) and the next day just about everything was sore.

I had something similar happen once. I was riding and turned to look over my shoulder to see if any cars were coming so I could swing around a parked pickup truck. When I went to look forward I was about 5 feet from the back of the pickup. I also did not put on my brakes and hit it going about 10 miles per hour. I didn't go into the back but I did get a cut on my shin. I went up to the homeowners house and had to tell them that I had dented their bumper. The guy was totally cool and told me not to worry about it and even gave me a bandage for my leg. The good thing was that I still got to finish my ride.

I'm sorry, dude, but when I see the drawings of what happened and try to imagine it, I just :roflmao::roflmao::roflmao:

Yeah that's how I lost my bike. Rear-ended a car that suddenly stopped on the road. Wasn't drafting or anything - my brakes just weren't that great. When I hit the car (after braking) I was probably doing 20 - 25 km/h (wasn't really paying attention to the speedometer at that point).

I used my chin as a brake when I hit the rear windshield of the car. Bounced off the back and landed on my feet. First thing I was doing was running my tongue over my teeth to see if I had broken any, and to make sure all limbs were working. Everything was fine. My fork was crushed. Since it was a "cheap" bike, I haven't replaced it - just going to buy a new bike in the spring. That really ruined the season for me, though - no more bike :(. Ah well, it was my fault for being too close.

Driver probably thought you were hijacking the car.
