I've never ridden it, but have friends who ride it yearly. There was an article on last years B2B several months ago in Buycycling magazine... a public library would have the back issue. Roughly, it starts near Lenoir, NC, wanders around the piedmont for about 50 miles, then up into the mountains, ending with the two mile climb up to the Grandfather Mtn. Parking lot. The last two miles are particularly brutal. If you like climbing, this is your ride!

I used to live near the Blue Ridge Mountains (a few miles from Mt. Pisgah to be exact). You'll LOVE the scenery, but it will defintely be tough going up some of the mountains. Make sure you're in good climbing shape. If you do it, say Hi to NC for me :D

You should definitely check out the article in Bicycling. I just read it again today. It is a great article. The author, was the rider. He said he broke down in tears at the end of the ride,,,,,,, it was that grueling. He said it was the kind of ride that ruins riding for you. He says the last 2 1/2 miles are like climbing straight up a wall. He says to be nice to some guy they call "Animal". He has ridden the thing several years in a row, and is "The Man". To top it off,,, he rode it during a major rain storm. A hurricane had just come ashore the weekend of the race. As said before, it is in the July 2003 issue.

By the way,,,,, the author lives in souther Illinois, in the hills. He had previously climbed Beech Mtn. in North Carolina, just because he read Lance's book, and Lance had climbed it. It is a 3000 ft climb. He did it without stopping. He rode 250 miles a week in the rolling hills of Illinois. He was no slouch. He finished the 100 miles in 6 hours 28 minutes and 36 seconds. He was 146th.

About 8 people do that as ritual from my shop. If you have alot of questions just give my shop a call (803 254 9797) ask for Jeremiah or Brian.

Hope that helps

Then, to top it off, you have to ride a shuttle (hearse?) back to the start.

If you're looking for organized centuries in western NC, here's one I'm doing in early October that might be of interest. Not nearly difficult, but I'm told it has its moments. It's not real well known, yet, so the roads are not as crowded, and you don't get the "cattle" treatment from organizers. That late in the year, the morning will probably be brisk, and leaves won't quite have started changing yet, but it should make for a great autumn ride.
