I am doing some DIY splices on my Niterider lighting sytsem to make it compatible with Trailtech universal connectors for the new Li-Ion battery. I can't seem to find the quality 3x heat shrink at any retail store in the DC area, or at least not at hardware stores. There is only one major electronics supply store and it is only open during hours that I am working. I'm not even sure they'd have it either. This 3x heat shrink is the kind NiteRider used before they went with their popplug and surlock connectors. It is great stuff and makes it's own seal when it shrinks down. I've had no luck at all with regular heat shrink in the past.

One of my colleagues suggested just using regular 2X shrink and fill it with liquid silicone before heating it up to make a waterproof seal. Has anyone actually tried this? It sounds like a nice hack but the heat shrink might not shrink with all that cold goo inside it.
