When I plan a long distance tour I'd like to meet up with cycling groups along the route. Aside from the LAB listings are there any other listings of bike clubs and how to contact them?

Here in Canada, each province has at least one cycletouring club. For example, Manitoba has the Winnipeg Cycletouring Club. Alberta has the Edmonton Bicycle and Touring Club and the Elbow Valley Cycle Club (in Calgary). If you were travelling through Canada, just do a search for a club in one of the cities or provinces you're going to and check their Links page. Many of them will list other touring clubs across Canada, plus other clubs within the province.

You might also check out the links for Randonneuring clubs ... even if you aren't into ultra distances. Many Randonneurs also tour, and many of us are into all sorts of other types of cycling. Not only that but we know the roads for many, many kilometers around where we live because we're cycling hundreds of kilometers each week. At the very least Randonneurs are probably some of the most knowledgable cyclists for route info not only because we ride so much, but also because many of us plan "official" routes for our events, which involves a lot of scouting.

If you're in England, check out the CTC: http://www.ctc.org.uk/ ... I had the pleasure of riding with a CTC club on two occasions and thoroughly enjoyed it. The club I rode with were definitely not out to race or to set any speed records ... they just ride for the fun of riding, and I loved that!

Most bike shops have their local free bike newspaper on display. Get on the web, find the bike shops along the way and you will find the local bike shops and local clubs. Call the shops on your cell during the weekdays when they might not be as busy with customers. Ask about the rides around town. Chances they host some rides as well, or know of all the local rides.
