Mountain Biking - New old bike...

On friday I stopped by a thrift store and they had a Giant ATX 880 for sale, it was $50 I figured why not I want a Hardtail. Considering I just got laid off on thursday probably should have saved the money but I'm impulsive buyer.
Looks like originaly it had Cantilever brakes, but was upgraded to Avid 5 V-brakes and Avid 3 speed dial levers. Has SRAM 600 gripshift and LX rear derailleur and STX front. My main question is on the fork it is a Yellow RockShox Quadra 21R, does anyone know anything about this fork? THere is two dials on top. Fork seems to be in very good shape atleast feels good. But figure a tear down and rebuild could not hurt but I don't know where to start on this fork.

sounds like you got a decent deal. probably should ditch the quadra fork, they became the indy's and now the jetts.

Yep fork seems in good shape along with the rest of the bike. I did not like the stem it was almsot vertical, so I had a spare I swapped it out with. I also swapped the wheels, I got some disc ready wheels a month or so ago so put my Velomax rogue wheels on it. Cabling seems virtualy new on the bike. I figure when I find a new job will and save up a bit of money I'll swap out the fork, only other thing I do not like is the rear cassette it is 11-28.

To be honest I'm not sure, it looked in good condition. Only some minor scratches and a bit of surface rust on a few bolts which I scrubbed away.
Frame is silver and red and fork is a ugly yellow.

Here is a picture of it, if anyone is intersted. It is fairly light and just took it for a quick spin around the neighberhood. Definately feels different riding them my FS mtb.

I agree, a very good find for only $50. My wife had that fork on her bike. It's about a '96 vintage if that helps. Although, I don't know whether it was stock on that model of put on afterwards.

The shock consists of a stack of elastomers on each side. The knob on each side is for "pre-load". You can also unscrew the whole cap and regrease the elastomers. It's not a complicated tear down.

However, if the elastomers are shot (like the one's on my wife's bike), find a replacement set will be difficult and costly. It's almost easier to just buy a new fork if it comes down to that.

hahaha a2p to be honest I did not even realize it yet.. I was busy trying to clean it up make sure it was running okie. I replaced the brake pads on it they were not in very good shape. I had a spare set of Koolstop and Wrangler pads sitting around. Fork seems to be in fairly good condition everything seems well taken care of. Even the cabling no signs of rust or corrosion at all they were not even dirty.

THanx for the info on the fork A2p, eventualy probably replace it but being unemployed now just need something to take up my free time that won't cost me much :) So might just tear it down to see what it is like :)
