I have a separated AC joint on one side and bad rotator cuffs on both sides.

I want to Tri but have not swam in 30 years.

Any tips for swimming? Or should I forget about it and stick to Duathalons?

I have not had a separated AC Joint, but I have and do have significant rotator cuff and tennis elbow issues.

I plan on doing a tinman in June and I think it will be ok..

There is a training method called "Total Immersion" which really focuses on minimal effort. Rather than speed drills the training emphazises efficiency..

You might want to look at that. This method seems to be helping me increase my endurance without stressing my shoulders.

Good Luck, Jerry

Thanks for the encouragement. I just signed up for swimming lessons.

Ok, so I got MTB, Hill Climb, 'Cross, Criterium, and now Triathlon. OoH Boy, I'm going to stay young!

(Or drown trying)

I dislocated my shoulder 13 times 20 years ago and had surgery for it. It still hurts to this day if I do the wrong thing. What I have found to help strengthen my shoulders so that my swim stroke doesn't have to be perfect is yoga. I do the down dog pose and hold it for as long as I can. I do the plank pose and hold that as well. Weightlifting never did any thing to help my shoulders but these two poses have made my shoulders very strong and I feel great in the water.

I have had a grade III AC joint dislocation (separated shoulder) for 15 years and have found that it never bothers me swimming freestyle - I'm not sure about combining it with a rotator cuff injury, however.
