I've finally started work on my Merlin road frame (Bob Jackson product, all 531) and have started in with 3M stripper and putty knife. I've found a rattle-can that's a "good enough" match to the original purple metallic, so it will be returned to more-or-less original appearance.
My question is regarding the brazed-on bit off the rear cluster: it's obviously for some center-pull brake QR, but which one? (Bike came with sidepulls so this braze-on was not in use when I acquired it)

Excuse my ignance UW1, but WHAT finally starting your Merlin??
Did I miss a thread somewhere? :o
When & how did you aquire your Merlin? Have you gotten the work sheet from BobJackson cycles.com?
And feel free to post more pics, especially the decals. Thanks ;)
Save East Hill from having to mention that. :p

The one I have lots of NOS hardware for, if you want to run centerpulls. PM w/address and I'll send you a set, if you want to run centerpulls.
(Got a whole box of various types from a small shop that was going out of business. I just have to dig a tunnel TO that box.)
LOVE that color btw, very Merlinesque!!

looks like it's missing some parts..
there was probably a cable stop with quick release lever assembly bolted to it.
similar to the ones that came with universal mod. 61 and other brakes
the little nib at the bottom is what the lever cam slides and locks against..
the cable stop itself bolts through and travels along the slot..
something like this guy:

Those are great, love 'em. I have them on the front of my bikes with cantlievers, the back has a brazed on cable stop so I can't use them on the back. Dia-compe and shimano made these as well.

I got this bike (not quite complete and in rough shape) back in the Summer and in San Jose. I put it on the back burner cause I have enough to do with an Allegro right now and was planning on saving my pennies until I could afford a REAL paint job (from you, Dr.). But now circumstance forces me to move it upfront and I'm going with a rattlecan job (but the finest I can manage) and may be flipping it rather than keeping it. I'll definitely ride it before I decide. Not sure if I will use CP brakes of not, but it seems like it would have come with Universals, most likely...right? Unfortunately, the rattlecan metallic purple ain't quite as "merlinesque" but I will keep the chrome lugs and ends and off-white panels, it'll just be a little more subdued.
I haven't contacted BJ for any worksheet: what will that tell me? How much do they charge?
JRrestore made the decals from artwork I drew and supplied, they came out very nicely except for the Prugnat Lug little one that he has promised to reprint: it was a font-substitution issue so I'm paying for half the cost of the re-do (half the fault was mine).
I'll post more pics (before and after) in that same photobucket site. Here's the link: http://s179.photobucket.com/albums/w314/unworthy1_photo/Merlin/
these pretty much cover the "before" angle, and show some of the rust and scratched paint, but the chrome was more or less OK after throwing all my tricks at it. and none of the rust has gone "terminal".
Hey! That's the same color as my Bob Jackson. I'll post it later.
