Fifty Plus (50+) - TdF Metaphor

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I was sort-of watching the NASCAR race at Miami- Homestead course and the newscaster was explaining Jimmie Johnson's position in the race comparing him to the Yellow Jersey and another car as his domestique.
What a change that sports announcers actually expect a typical sports fan to know what a Yellow Jersey was and what it means. :p

I know one NASCAR fan who actually watched the TdF last year:D My ex son-in-law and I were talking about the TdF and he decided to watch it. He was absolutely blown away with the peloton. He couldn't image riding so close at those speeds.

We've come a long way, baby.
I remember a few years ago at the Tour de Georgia, they compared the advertising of sponsors on the cars and jerseys to the same with NASCAR in hopes of making it seem more interesting to the local good ol' boys.

Didn't US Postal leave cycling to sponsor NASCAR? Or, was that just a rumor? I don't know, but cycling may take a foot hold in mainstream culture yet. I sure would like a larger number of drivers on the road that are aware of cyclist and don't think we're freaks. Perhaps encouraging the metaphors is a really good thing.
I don't know which is the more amazing - NASCAR going mainstream or TdF going mainstream.

USPS was told to quit sports sponsorships, because it wasn't part of their allowed activities.
I think it was congress or some congressional committee.

They endorse Tyvek homewrap, perhaps through the Dupont connection, but I have never seen a stock car covered in Tyvek. :) Perhaps they use it when they build the pit garages?
