I just got an email from a friend of mine regarding a solo cyclist on SGRT that got mugged. It happened just outside of El Dorado Park. Two hoodlums knocked this solo cyclist off his bike, stole his wallet, his cell phone, and his bike. They also broke his nose. My friend's friend, rode through there about 30 minutes after it happened.
I have always had issues with riding the river trail alone, and this further supports my fear. I will not ride the river trail alone. So if you do decide to ride the river trail, try to buddy up with someone. The river trail is so isolated, that if someone decides to attack, no one would ever hear about it. And this is not the first time I've heard of this happening. The previous times I've heard this happen are usually on the weekdays.

I keep hearing about these things, so I changed my mind on riding it to visit my wife. It sucks that we live in a world like this where people do senseless things.

I think this is the same one we heard about earlier this week. Urbanknight, honestly the trail gets sketchy south of where you are headed. Keep your head up and turn around if anything looks questionable. Where you are headed you could get off at Beverly or Whittier and head down one of the N/S streets.

You know I'm headed to Santa Fe Springs, right? That's a slightly sketchy area in the first place (I think). I'm only happy my wife works in that area because it's far better than Skid Row where she used to work!

My wife, my ex-girlfriend, and many of my friends are from Whittier just north of Santa Fe Springs. We used to ride through Santa Fe Springs all the time. It is mostly industrial and is really not that bad. You live in Pasadena right? Try riding northeast of the Rose Bowl at dusk. Santa Fe Springs has nothing on that. The bike trail north of Telegraph is really not bad. Ride fast and keep your head up.
Same event?

I don't ride the SGRT but do the SART. When I encounter guys walking on the side of the road, I'll make the meanest ugliest face and mutter as if talking to myself," Who the #@$% threw all the $#%@^%#$ glass all over the mother $#%@^#&% road, Those $#%@^#$ stupid mother $#%$^$&# pieces of $#%@!!!!!!...Has worked so far, nobody has taken a swing at me!:D

I take Woodbury to Lake to get back home from the Rose Bowl on a weekly basis  If SGRT north of Santa Fe Springs isn't as bad as that, I should just "toughen the @#$% up".

I'm with redal on this one. I grew up in Whittier, and have ridden the SGRT many many times and there used to be only one area north of Whittier I had any misgivings about. That area just inbetween the 10 and 60 fwy. You would ride thru groups of men, hanging out, fishing, drinking, whatever. It just had more of vibe due to the people hanging out. South of the Santa Fe Springs/Whittier area, I found that the later you are out on the trail, the more negative types start to show up. Whenever I go into a tunnel, under and overpass or in some weird section I put on my radar for the what ifs?
