First goal: Reasonable: See my sig, I'm turning a sub 6 hour Century ride on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for Tour de Cure.
Second goal: Insane category! It's doable though. A Triple Century in a day. I've mostly planned the route and will be riding from Michigan City, Indiana to Owensboro, KY. This is a total of ~310 miles, and the catch is, I'm imposing a 24 hour time limit on it. SAG Supported, no way to self support a ride this intense!
There we go, I just committed to it! My wife thinks I NEED to be committed, but we'll see ;)
These are my primary goals for the year upcoming. :D
yikes.
per your note to me in the other thread, why not go another 300 miles and come hang out in DC?
on a serious note, that's very impressive. I presume you'd go with the specialized? calorie intake, lights, weather, etc. at that rate will be a huge factor.
I'm aiming for a first real century, fwiw.
What do you think about when you ride that far?

I don't think......
I fall down inside myself and the world becomes patterns I react to and breathing and pain. It's pretty much as simple as that (by the way, the longest ride in a day to date has been 167 miles.). When I ride that far, my wife manages my hydration and nutrition. I'm too far inside myself and will forget to eat and drink.
Yes, I'll be riding the Allez, but will have the Schwinn along as a backup bike. It's heavy, yes, but utterly reliable ;) yikes.

I'm aiming to do the California Triple Crown (3 doubles in a year). Also the King of the Mountains competition (3 centuries with 10,000 ft of climbing). Did a century this year with 12,000 ft. Not too tough so I figure if I get back into shape, I should be able to do 3. That means losing the 30 lbs I've put on in the last couple of years.
I just need a goal in order to get back into shape after kickin' iot for the last couple of years.:D
Now a triple century, that's just crazy!

Good luck with your goals.
Mine are very simple. Lose some more weight, get in better shape, ride as much as I can. My new mtb is gonna get used well this next season.

I want to do a metric century per week during the season, May to October here in Finland, and attempt a double century at some point after some touring in the southeast of the country.
The tour will probably be quite short and slow since I'm bringing a first time touring friend but maybe we'll manage a couple of metric centuries just to keep it up :-)
Good luck to everyone, I'll be on my trainer 2 times a week between running and maybe a bit of skiing now that the snow has come.

Tom - are you just coming to the conclusion that you are insane? It is much better when you embrace it.
300 miles in a day - wow! I think that would mean I could ride around Costa Rica.

DANG!!!!! Those are some huge goals. I will start thinking about my goals for next year soon. I haven't met one of my goals for this year yet, so I had better hope for some good weather.

OK...here are my goals for 2008...
AT LEAST 3000 miles (trainer miles count for me ;))
Complete a double metric century.
Complete at least two other imperial century rides
Complete at least one of the imperial centuries in under 6 hours
Complete the MS 150 Jack & Back ride
Reach 170 lbs by 6/30/2008 (as long as it's a healthy feeling weight)
I think that's it.

A couple of imperials, and a double metric.
After this crud year of random, unavoidable soft and hard tissue issues I just want to stay healthy for the SUMMER, dang it.

Tom, I don't usually post here, but do you think folks would mind my posting about my Philadelphia to Orange County, CA, cross country ride in June 2008? And is that more or less insane than a triple century?

Feel free to, and it's less insane than a triple in a day in most respects, because you'll likely be averagoing about 40-60 miles a day rather than 300. ;). I hope you do this tour and wish you the best :D
Uhhhhh. Yeah, that IS insane!http://www.2ni2.com/emoticon/serio/loco2.gif
310 in one day? What is the Guinness record? That is huge! If you made it you would be God-like.

Well after a 300 mile ride I'd think you'd burn enough calories (barely) to eat a meal at Moonlite BBQ in Owensboro. Don't go to Owensboro and NOT eat at Moonlite BBQ.

The NY Times has an article from 1897 about a guy riding 316 miles in a day. I'm not finding anything about the 24-hour record on a "normal" bike that's current.

Tom, you're not crazy! If doing a triple makes you crazy then I must be insane. I've done a triple every year for the last three years and I'm getting ready for my triple for 2008. Doing a triple is just one long day, you start in the dark and finish in the dark. Good luck and let us know how you do.

Wow, you guys are already thinking about 2008 when we aren't even done with 2007. I still have one more goal for this year, although it is a modified goal.
2007 Goals
Finish the Assault on Mt Mitchell - DONE 10:08
Finish century in under 6 hours w/stops - DONE total time 5:53
Ride 2500 miles - DONE
Change target to 3000 miles - DONE
Change target to 3500 miles - DONE
Change target to 4000 miles - Still to do, just under 200 miles left.
So far 2008 goals:
Finish Assault on Mt Mitchell in under 9 hours
So far that is the only goal, there is a twist. My daughter and I will be doing the easy part (the first 70 miles, 3000 feet elevation gain) on our Tandem. Then in Marion I plan to switch to my single bike for the remaining 33 miles. Please note that in the last 25 miles there is over 8000 feet of elevation gain.

Hey, maybe I'll see you at Mt. Mitchell. I am gearing up for it, too. I have no idea what sort of time goal to set, though. I did it once in 1988 in 12-1/2 hours, then, 2 years later, I got to Marion in 3-1/2 hours before realizing I had pulled my back out and didn't continue up the hill.
Good luck to Tom--I just finished the El Tour de Tucson century (109 miles) in 4:59:14. My goal was sub-5 hours, so I barely made it. (Now, 3 days later, my legs are finally starting to talk to me again.) I know if anyone can accomplish a goal he sets his mind to, Tom can.
Wow, that is one heck of a goal, but here's to you and good luck.

I'm 90% on the way to joining your team for the Indy ride. I just have to wait until the 2008 kart racing schedule is confirmed to make sure that there is no conflicts with my racing. Worst case would be just a pledge.
Tom, you are most definitely hard core! 300 miles? You Da Man!!!:D

My 2008 Goals

July - ACS Ride - 65 miles
August - ride the entire length of the Great Allegheny Passage
September - finish my 2nd triathlon
That's all so far, I will find some more time permitting
