Just got mine and put it together. Pretty simple, though I have an extra part or three that I cant quite figure out if they go to anything or not. I'll take a picture later...

54cm, weight is 21.2lbs. Wearing clothing I just weighed in at 159.8 (and dropping!), and holding the bike I weigh 181.0.

Part I don't know about was in there, threaded on the inside, one side has an opening for an allen head and it is hollow. There is also an s hook (no clue whatsoever) two screws (again, no clue) and a piece of rubber.

You can do a search for me, I have been riding a giant ocr3 and will continue. This bike will be my commuter and tuesday club rider. Weekends and thursdays with the reston group will still be with the giant. Posting here in this group since, well the bike is a cross bike and it seemed right.

One question, can someone explain to me why these brakes are so fricking hard to setup right? Getting them setup so they only have a little bit of travel along with enough slack to "release" the non screwdown side to take off a wheel seems.. well really annoying. Road brakes seem easy enough.

wouldn't "flipping it" be dumb?

i mean, it seems that on a 'cross bike you'd want more rise, rather than less, for a lot of the same reason mountain bikes have higher rise stems... i mean, i've got the stem "up" on mine...

Some racers like less rise, helps the front end dig into corners. My stem is flipped up.

Completely useless for helping me with the brakes. Just decided to start chewing on one of the rubber bands holding on some cardboard, then promptly barfed out a huge hairball and left. (he didn't swallow a rubber band or anything, just had a hairball)

Just got mine set up yesterday and had the same questions. Here's what I think on the extra parts.

1. Screws are for the reflectors.

2. Rubber thingy is also for the reflectors. Cut it and wrap around tubes?

3. Hollow screw thingy is an extra brake mount? Looks the same.

4. If you figure out the S-hook, let me know. :)

Yes, canti brake setup was a pain. I'm using mine for a winter trainer on the road since the indoor trainer makes me cry. First ride is tonight since it was too late last night.

One more thing...Flip it. ;)

The rubber strap is to attach the red reflector to the cat's tail. The cat may take issue with this, but continue on regardless.

Got mine last night after missing the ups guy twice (same exact bike). I had the same setup questions (what's the silver threaded thingy) and yep, the brakes I can see are going to be finicky. My front is right (although I guess I should see if the wheel can still come off!). Jumping on the rear brake now.

Going to use it as a trainer and want to run some cx races around here (or in Texas where I spend time) this year too. This is my first road bike, just have an old Haro mtb I got off a buddy years ago for $70. Think I'm going to take it (Haro) to Ray's in Cleveland and try and kill myself.....

I replaced the brake pads fairly quickly on mine to jagwires

you have to push the pad in the opposing direction of the tightening force with your thumb, and if you have squealing make sure the front tip of the pad angles inward

check the tightening bolt on the non-drive crank every couple of rides, mine went loose and became unsalvagable

Brake setup is easier if you use a straddle cable with a yoke on the centre cable. Just make sure you have something to stop the front straddle cable dropping onto the tire in the event of centre cable faolure.
