I've been a lurker for MANY months with only a single post under my belt. I got inspired to get back on the saddle after reading many of the stories here.

Well I was FINALLY able to score a bike. For months and months I was looking for cheap road/cyclocross bikes or something nicer since the only way I could pay for it was with a trade for some computer equipment I had, since every spare penny we have is getting saved for the bambino on the way.

Then I flip-flopped over to a mountain bike after my Dad got one, (I still intend on getting one, just not now). After a month of no hits on the mountain bike that ever worked out, I then pretty much resigned to getting anything I could get my hands on.

Well then luck finally struck and a guy from craigslist emailed me, and by the end of the day we had setup a fair trade of his 2006 Trek 1000 for some computer hardware. He even drove it over to my house from a good 60 miles away!! I couldn't have gotten luckier.

So that no one is left in suspense and I don't get any "Worthless without pics" posts here are the pics:

I am still researching all of the parts on the bike, so I don't know what is decent or not yet. From what I have seen so far the Alexrims will probably not support my 260lb frame but I might as well give them a shot. I am an upgrader at heart but with limited cash I can only hope they hold out long enough for me to enjoy the bike a little before it becomes too cold to take a test spin a few times.

Any and all advice on what to look out for is always appreciated.

Looks good to me, but I'm surely not the world's best bike judge, either.

My advice: Get riding, keep riding, even if it's some old junky Walmart bike- don't be waiting for the perfect bike before you do anything.

My experience with cheap aluminum rims on a mountain bike at 280 lbs- they worked fine till I got 'em off road- I think they might have lasted forever on the road- so your rims may do you great, just don't go hopping curbs with 'em.

I have a 2007 Trek 1000 and love it. I am about 225 lbs. but have had no trouble with the Alex 450 rims. . . yet, but I stay on the pavement and watch where I'm going. You might want to have your LBS take a looksee and check for any loose spokes or alignment issues. Good luck and have fun.

I have a couple of friends riding Trek 1000's. They are both happy with them. 1 is a clyde. I believe at one time Bicycling magazine listed it as the best $700 bike they had ever ridden!
