Road Cycling - What performance gains did you get with new wheels?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hi everyone, Getting ready to purchase some new wheels for my road bike and was wanting some feedback before I make a purchase. I figure I'll spend in the range of $300 to $700 ( I know this is a big range, sorry). I'm not against buying a set of custom wheels either. I have read many older posts and replies on what wheels many are using, but I haven't really seen anyone mention what performance improvements they were seeing, ie what it did for their AVS/Cruising/Flats/Hills/Acceleration. My wheels right now are 4 years old and are Mavic CXP 21's with Ultegra Hubs. Hoping to buy a set of wheels which I'll be happy with.
Not looking for exact improvements, just hoping for a better idea.
Thanks in advance!

My switch to Mavic Ksyrium SSC had a small affect on my riding speed which is mostly notable during descents when I tuck in and rocket down a hill.
They are a very smooth spinning wheel which I would recommend. The Ksyrium elites are a bit less expensive with the same hubs and rims just different spokes.
The difference is very small however so do not expect miracles from changing wheels.

i experienced miracles! LOL
well maybe i did become a stronger rider at the same time... but after i switch to my cane creek aerohead teams, i could fly up hills that used to beat the poop out of me. and i noticed about a 2mph gain in my cruising speed.
switch from shimano 105 + Araya 700c(forgot the model) rims to Shimano XTR + rigida sphinx.
Faster acceleration... Overall speed on downhill increased by 2-5kms depending on wind..
Bike felt lighter.. well, XTR+rigida shpinx was a couple of grams lighter..
you'll very likely experience a perceived performance increase when you buy a new set of wheels, because you will have talked yourself into it. you'll go faster because you feel you should be going faster. which is not necessarily a bad thing!
