I'm trying to decide what type of single speed rear hub to buy. I can see how each type would have it's advantages and disadvantages. What's the preferred type and why?

Why not go by specific hubs.. Chris king and Paul and Phil wood would probably be some of the best options out their. How much are you looking at spending?

I was thinking about spending around $150. I also plan to use disc brakes. I like the Chris King's, but they would double the value of my bike. I was set on buying Pauls, but I've been reading that the brass washers that clamp the dropouts aren't durable enough and don't last very long(doesn't sound too serious to me, though). Phils are nice....almost too nice for my bike.

My LBS recommended Novatec(based on saving me money) or re-spacing a Shimano DX BMX hub to 135mm. I can't find any info on the Novatecs, anyone know if they are any good?

....I've been using a cassette hub with BMX cog and spacers, but that hub is needed on another bike...

Yep chris King are expensive, but will last a lifetime. I have a set of philwood hubs on my Fixed gear bike and I love them! I like the feature, that I can use a allen wrench rather then a 15 wrench to unbolt the hubs one less tool to carry. I don't know novatec off-hand, you can check out the van dessel hubs they are inexpensive $80 for the pair not sure how good they are to be honest though. I think a forum member here recently bought them for this bike. If you have vertical drop outs you might look at the ecentric white industry hubs. I have a set of road wheels built on white industry hubs and they have been great.
