So I broke the front buckle on my messenger bag. Anyone know where I could find an old metal seat belt buckle? If I go to a junkyard, how does that work? Do you pay for whatever you find and take home?

If they have to pull it off for you they will charge you. The best way is to just go in and get whatever you need, in this situation a seat belt buckle. You can either pay for it, or just bring a tool box and put it into your tool box because paying for a seatbelt is just funny.

You can get a plastic 2" buckle at JoAnns for like $2. Would recommend an automotive or aeronautic buckle over a plastic one though.

Not really "stealing" in this case. All the yards Ive been to, and I have been to quite a few, have always had the unwritten rule of "whatever you can fit in your pockets you can keep." Ive even put a lot of little stuff, like body bolts and fuses, in my tool bag and when they checked it out before I left they just told me to keep it and go.

The real challenge will be to find a car with a belt set up that works well. You will more than likely have to use the ones from the rear seat since those are more likely to be attach to the shell floor by a belt rather than hard plastic or bracket like the front. If you find a car that does this in the rear then check the one for the middle passenger. Find one you like, cut it out from the floor/seat belt, and go home.

If you are just interested in the belt itself, just bring a razor blade or knife. Cut the straps attached to each side of the buckle and you are good to go. Above poster is right about the plastic bracket though.

yards usually say anything that small is a gimme, they aren't going to many much from it anyways.

Well, ive been to about 1000 junkyards and rebuilt a dozen cars and they def dont give 'anything smaller than a clutch plate away'. Thats ****ing stupid.
CA junkyards even have a price list in the front and i know for a fact they have prices for seatbelt buckles, dash switches and tons of **** that you think stealing would be ok.

I actually had my manhattan portage strap upgraded by a local seamstress/mess bag maker who used a cheap plastic buckle so this time I want to go with something a little sturdier and easier to use. I'll probably have her put the buckle on, but first I have to find one.

Tell you what russiankdi, why dont you put the peice he needs in a ballon, shove it deep into the bowels of you thieving *******, then send it to him in the mail? Screw this guy man, just go to the junk yard, pull a seat belt, ask the guy how much, Im sure he'll either give it to you or he'll charge you like $5.00, never steal **** (or make up reasons why stealing **** is OK) as no matter what you believe it will come back to you three times as bad.
