Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Nose Wheelies

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm working on this trick, any tips? The only thing I've found to make it easier is a super tight front brake and risers. I guess bullhorns might be even easier.

otherwise known as endo's, noob
Last month in Vancouver I saw a guy on a road bike do a nose wheelie up to a red light. It looked seriously rad.

an endo and a nose wheelie are not the same thing.

+1
For an endo, honk on the brake hard, or run into something. Riding out of it is key here, usually backwards.
For a nose wheelie, watch this video backwards from about 2:41 to 2:31. To be fair, a brake would help get it started, though he doesn't have one

Nose wheelies on road/tarck bikes probably aren't the best idea.

He's right but nice try, genericbikedude.
Maybe go ride your bike more?
It doesn't take too much effort to do an endo without using a brake on skinny tires if you're clipped in. Just a little bit of commitment and not too much speed.

it's a matter of fulcrums, the fulcrum being your front hub. balance the weight of you and your bike on it.
the concept is simple. the practice is harder.

oopps, I am wrong. track bike tricks are still stupid though.

Yeap.
I tried 'em for about an hour today and managed to do two that were about 8 squares in the sidewalk (maybe 15'-20'.) I ended up angling my risers forward, cholo style, that seemed to make it easier. I also have a 120 reach stem.

meh, i suck at them, but they're fun to do. all you need is a little space and you've got a fun way to pass the time. it's true there are a lot ways it sucks that track bikes will never work for certain bmx moves, for example, but i hate hearing people say "ur st00pid, you can has bmx". i guess i just don't understand why some people having fun moves some other people to anger/annoyance/whatever.

i love you doofo. start a blog. you are hilarious.
i have done it on my rode bike, but i did warp a 105 wheel that way
i did a pretty good one that involved a large object on the ground, my bike, and my face ending up on the pavement. was that really a cool trick? i thought i fell.

it's BMX, but i imagine one could do the same on a 700c wheel bike and enough forward lean.

Tricks on BMX bikes always look so slick and smooth. Always boggles my mind how good someone who knows what they are doing makes it look.
some of that video was definitely shot in columbus

oh, def. i saw 15th and high on there. maybe some osu campus? i avoid that place though (especially on saturdays), so....not an expert.

hmmmm.... was it downtown vancouver? did he/she look like a messenger? i've only seen one messenger do nose manuals but he never did it on his road-style bike and i never see any of the roadies around here do anything even remotely dangerous/fun/illegal on the streets.
curious.

Motorcycle types call 'em "stoppies". Doing it on a bike would be cool, and slightly less intimidating. At least, it would be nice not to have a 300+lb bike land on you if you screw it up.
There appears to be an endless supply of humorous videos of people trying stoppies and crashing their fancy crotch-rockets on the YouTubes. That wobbly bit right before the fall gets me every time.

hilariously, the trick at 1:54 is done against the north end of thebuilding that i live in.

^If it was a tall blonde guy on a red Colnago conversion, its James Weeks. Great all around rider. I've seen him do a nose manual Gturn to fakie ride down 3 steps fixed.
I've been working on mt footjam nosepicks lately.. still not dialed.
(on bmx, not tracky)
oh, yeah, hilarious....cough.
i cannot imagine that it'd be so funny to anyone other than me.

I have spent most of my riding life working to make sure I don't find myself in that position that most often precedes an otb experience but do work on them in case I find I actually need that skill... and they can be fun when you don't crash.
I was hit by a truck (caught a mirror) while riding my fixed road bike this summer and did a nose wheelie down, through, and up the other side of a fairly massive pothole at some serious speed... there weren't any chicks to impress and I was just happy I wasn't killed.

yeah, not so funny to me, but i can see how it'd be funny to you. "hey, there's my house!"
i'd laugh if i saw mine on there.
edit: oh, and if you know brett at the 15th house, he says a lot of bmx videos get made here, he says over the past few years columbus has become one of the biggest bmx spots in the country.

wow thats an impressive video. I have been known to bust out manuals and wheelies on my road bike while wearing full kit on group rides, (that will break a pace line up quick as hell). but I prefer to only do it when I am running my old wheel set.
maybe we should start a trick thread in the road bike section and see what they say.
