I'd use nothing but period correct Dura Ace on a Volare, but it's not my bike.

Where does one find this dura ace period correct items for less than the cost of a new carbon bicycle? :) I'm being a wise guy but if I find a nice dura ace crankset thats not all scratched up like the majority of the ones I have seen and are not worn out like the rest. I would probably snap them up in a heartbeat. ADDENDUM I just about had a set for 90.00 on e-bay and at the last 3 seconds I got outbid. Now in light of this would a newer set that was ISIS work on this bike? I really don't see why not since its all about the bottom bracket mount. Correct? Hopefully I can find a nice set without breaking the bank

Check out 250190399472 on eBay. This volare looks to be very original...might give you a good idea what should be on'er...

I'm telling you that bike is a beaut but I already have a red bike and besides I like the idea of building this one up myself. But it sure is a sweet looking ride

How scratched up is too scratched up? I have a Dura Ace crankset - 7400 version. The rings have notable wear, and there is wear where the toe straps have rubbed. They are in pretty good shape beyond that. I can send you pictures if you are interested.

Reserve is $1000, which gets you a chrome Paramount in good shape these days. If it was a "must-have" to fill a hole in a Schwinn lightweight collection maybe, but I'm not that guy.

You might want to try some EZ Off and a buffing wheel. This set was badly scratched:

Agreed. Maybe in person the bike is perfect enough to merit 1k, but hard to verify from pictures.

Maybe Santa will bring a buffing wheel to NH for Christmas. :D Do you take crankset restoration orders? Just beautiful!

A little model paint and some lacquer thinner, and those letters would complete the new look. That is very nice OFG!,,,,BD

Yeah, I've bought the paint but haven't gotten around to it yet. One more trip to the model store and I think I'll spend a week just doing touch ups.

FWIW, any old bench grinder will work, and I bought the buffing kit and a few extra wheels from Caswell:

I have a set of period correct in transit from a fellow forumite. I should be getting them this week. I'm really looking forward to seeing this stuff and to see how much I'm going to have to polish but from his info the stuff is in really good shape. My plan is to get all the pieces on the bike and get it in running order before I decide what to do about refinishing the frame. I may have it all powdercoated and outline the lugs. I think that really looks cool. Somewhere on the forum I saw a really nice deep metalflake like blue frame with outline around the lugs that I think were in gold now that was pretty sharp.
