For those of you who would like a lighter, easier ride, I came up with a Stone Lite route that can be seen here. (http://www.geocities.com/grumpypig/StoneLiteRouteslip.pdf)

IN!

Routeslips posted in first post!!

I don't have a printer so if you want one...

I'll try not to get lost this time. Damn Little Gopher Canyon or whatever the hell it was.

If'n I still have the same wicked chest cold I had on Saturday, I will be utilizing one of the many shortcuts available to all wussies on this route. Gopher Canyon, Camino Del Rey, Old 395...pretty much anything that bypasses Crushing Carnage road and gets me to beer (the best cold remedy ever) faster.

PS: The white bar tape is going...as is the ass-hatchet that is the white Selle San Marco Regal. I'm either doomed to ride my old, 1/2 pound Brooks team Pro (like angel kisses on my heiney) or my $30 Fizik Aliante Sport, which numbs the taint, but doesn't cleave my ample buns'o'mush in twain....Thought all of you would like to have an update on that issue.

PPS: Removing the initial climb up San Elijo is chumptastic. Didn't like it, Frank? Didn't want a 2 mile, 7% climb first thing into a ride?

yeah...me neither.

Hot damn Escondido is far! Can anyone recommend a good cheap hotel in the area? I'm probably not gonna feel like driving home after a Stone IPA and a 65 mile ride.

Cheers

Thanks to Jeff, Jason, Gregg and Paul for coming to the Stone Prelude. We rode the course, discussed some changes to the route and had a good time. Today's route was a little over 70 miles with about 6,000 vertical feet. With a rest stop and regroups, it took us almost 6 hours to finish. Next week's ride will be 6 miles shorter.

It was a great ride (though I thought that everyone was trying to kill me with the initial pace). Here's the elevation & grade profiles from my Garmin for the preview. I'm hoping that I'm not working on Sat so I can join everyone. If not have a great ride and enjoy a Stone brew for me

Burbank to Escondido? It's maybe 1.5 hours, tops....the way Jsigone drives.

Really, though, we all go up to your neck of the woods and drive back the same day, but normally with a metric ton of burritos and margaritas sloshing around in our colon...you can make it back.

Just have one or two and get a growler to go.

Gregg: It was nice meeting, chatting, and riding with you. Sorry I had to bail out early, but family obligations were pressing. That, and my saddle hurt, and I was coughing like crazy.

well murder is right there at 7 miles into the ride, 1 mile at average of 9.5% and kicks ass at the second bend. But of course this is optional....to do repeats:D

speaking of saddles, can I try the toupe out?

I'll bring it with me...you probably won't want to try it out on this ride, though. It's becoming the village skank...everybody's getting a ride. :D

Well, I rode 'er hard. Gave her a thorough pounding, and she just didn't do it for me...so I gave you a shot at her. You rode her for a lot longer than I did. Gave her some hope at a long-term relationship. But, in the end, she came running back to me. But I've already mounted her, was dissatisfied, and am going to let Jeff have a turn.

you make it sound so dirty...i only used her for honestly about 200 miles or so...about 5-8 good hard rides...and end the end she left me wanting.

If I get out there this week I'll try to look.

If you do an internet search, try San Marcos. The brewery is in an industrial area next to SM.

Edit: Super 8, 528 W Washington Ave, Escondido, CA 92025, 1.62 miles from the brewery, from $59 on Expedia.
Disclaimer: Never stayed there, never seen it, know nothing about the neighborhood.

Hooboy, Extort's going to be broke now that Pico's coming! Hey Pico.

robncircus - I wasn't trying to be flip, so sorry about that. Here's a Motel/Hotel list from all of North County San Diego (http://san.diego.lodgingguide.net/north_county_lodging.htm), which is everything North of about Del Mar on the coast and Mira Mesa inland....pretty much everything North of Miramar MCAS.

The Quality/Comfort/Days/Best Westerns will all be about the same.

If you have AAA, you might get a discount.

As Grumpy Pig said, Stone is almost on the border of Escondido and San Marcos. The towns between you and Stone are Escondido, San Marcos, Vista, and Oceanside, so if you want to be able to stagger into the hotel, try those towns first.

Stone Brewery and World Bistro (http://www.bikeforums.net/www.stonebrew.com) is at 1999 Citracado Parkway, Escondido, CA 92029, so you can reference distance from the brewery to your hotel. If you need someone to do a 'drive-by' to check out a hotel you have in mind, let me know.

The Super 8 mentioned isn't really the greatest neighborhood. It's right on Centre City and Washington. I don't think I've been in one neighborhood ever, where if the street has a President's name, it's a good neighborhood. It is close to Downtown Escondido and a huge movie theater, and an Irish Pub...so if you're wanting to make a night of it, there is something to do.

I drove by the motel at Washington and Centre City Parkway. It's not too bad looking.I would stay there if I was by myself but would go somewhere nicer if my wife was with me.

There are 3 motels on that corner and they're about the same.

There's another motel called the Mt. Vernon a block over that's $42/night. My wife looked at it and just said, "no."

Sweet holy mother...I'm really fat. Not Mo'Phat...more fat. Ah well, 'tis the offseason, right? At least I could still do a good pull or two at 60 miles.

To Frank: Great route, and thanks for organizing.
To Jeff: Thanks for the parking, even though it let your boss know that you were done and available.
To Dave: I hope you feel better and that everything with the cab worked out. Doctor?
To Matt: Thanks for the arm warmers...it was cold the entire ride. Didn't warm up even a little bit.
To Mel, Tiff, Jason, Jason, Mark, Ian, Ed, and Paul: Great company...y'all's good peoples.
To Phil: I don't remember beating you up any hills, but thanks for the beer.
