Twas a bit on the nippy side on the morning commute even as I was dressed warmly my eyes were still watering for about 20 minutes after I got here. Should be nice this afternoon going home though

I saw the sun this moring so I dressed light... oops Im still cold and its been an hour.

Cold it was. The TV said it was 37 when I left the house at 6. But layered up with my SmartWool undies and socks, show covers, and rain gear I was fine after a couple of miles. Traffic was very light, which was a good thing.

4 day weekend, though! I'm going to have to go down into the Southcenter area on Friday or Saturday and I plan to ride my bike for sure. I just love passing all the cars sitting still or cruising the parking lot.

You aren't going SHOPPING, are you  .

Although, now that I think about it, I should go down to Bicycles West and get some tyres... :D .

I'm going shopping, but at Rockler Woodworking and Supplies for some specialty hardware. They're in one of the strip malls adjacent to the mall itself and, because of their specialty nature, they aren't usually all that busy. The stuff I need to buy will all fit into a backpack, so I'm good.

However, I might just ride around the mall a few times and maybe up and down the parkway just to annoy the drivers :)

Man was it cold this morning. I left at 5:30am for a 40 mile ride. My toes almost fell off.

East Hill

So, how cold was it this morning? Well, when I went for a ride around 10.00 am, there was enough frost on the ground at Big Soos Creek to make me think it had snowed! And, it's now officially winter, because I saw my first Bald Eagle flying over the meadow.

I went for a ride about 10 am...not too cold by then, LOTS of bikes on the road.

Shifty

It was 37 degrees when I started my ride at 9:00 this morning. No cars on the roads, I guess they are all at ****mart, good, I hope they had as much fun shopping as I did riding. Beautiful sunny day here in Eugene, hope you all have the same!

East Hill

Lots of frost on the roofs, so it was nippy, but the sun is out and life is good (as long as you stay away from the malls).

spent the morning at the bike shop in Orting showing Brian the Volare. I picked up a headset, its a Campy old timey piece I wiped it off and its so bright I had to wear shades looking at it. Picked it up for a VERY reasonable price brought it home and tried it. The bottom bearing surface fit like a charm but the top piece is just a shade larger diameter than will fit. I know its supposed to be a snug so I'll take it in on the lathe and turn off about 5 thousandths so it will go in there. I know its not original to the bike but its Campy and its really well made now I see what all the fuss is about

Went for a ride for an hour yesterday. Hit a nice hill loop from my house 1000ft climbing. There was a lot of frost on the road so decents were pretty hairy. When I got home I couldn't feel my toes.

Gonna reach a balmy 33 degrees today with a low tonight of 21, man I wish I had my X-mas presents already!

Yeah, but you live in WARDEN! Do you ever go fishing at Potholes Reservoir?

unixpro...

Do you do woodworking as a hobby? Or something more serious?
Just curious as I go to that Rockler store alot since it's so close to where I live.
I guess East Hill is close by too?

It's a hobby. This weekend I built a credenza-like TV stand for the new unit we're getting. I finished most of the woodworking this weekend and I'll do the sanding and painting next weekend. Most of my work is scrollsaw, though.

I was down in Southcenter on Saturday morning expecting to see gridlock. The place was almost deserted! I was absolutely astounded! I didn't even have any troubles crossing into the turning lanes. I was told by 3 different people that it was too cold to ride, though. Guess they must think that people who ski are insane.

I was back down this morning (Sunday) and didn't have any trouble again. Very light traffic. Lowes was only running one cash register at 9:00 in the morning. If this keeps up, it's going to be a pretty hard season for the retailers.

East Hill

I think all the shoppers were at Cabela's this weekend. There were at least six Lacey Police Department cars there, plus the "Special Response Unit" trailer! We went on Sunday around 9.30 am and it was busy. By the time we emerged about two hours later it was jam packed, and a madhouse out in the parking lot.

On the way back from Cabela's I had my husband drop me off at the Super Mall so that I could ride home from there. The Super Mall was not that busy either.

Waybehind, yes, I am only about six miles from Southcenter. I'm about a quarter of a mile from Kentridge High School.

31*F this morning, according to the bank's display in the center of Woodinville. I've been a week off my commute due to some eye problems, and for a first day back on the commute (after a nice 2 hour ride with KT yesterday) it was bracing but felt good.
We'll see how the day pans out, but I'm seeing 70% or better chance of rain for the commute home.

I've been really impressed with the combo of gear I'm wearing this year. I ditched the bulky, sweaty rain gear and I'm wearing REI midweight polypros under my windproof tights and long-sleeved microfleece-lined jersey. Even in the rain and mid 30s temperatures, I'm wet but I'm not cold.

East Hill....
We've talked before. I was look for a ridng partner down here. I'm kinda still looking too.

Unixpro....
I asked because I am a carpenter, and I go to that Rockler store a fair bit.

And the Bicycles West store too.

The Lowe's on Rainier usually only has one checkout open in the mornings too. They must not be very busy in the mornings?

I'm with 1bluetrek, I made it to work [21f] but a freezing rain storm is blowing through and there is one condition 2 wheeled devices do not work well and that is on a nice glass surfaced roadway. Wasn't it just summer?

Studded tyres! I think it was summer just a short while ago, but now it is the cold and flu season :p .

Lots of places to fish out in the potholes East! Build a fire and bring lots of coffee...

Got some snow night before last yuck! Think its in the low 20s outside now... bed sounds nice.

East Hill

bed sounds nice.

It's hard to get motivated to leave that comfortable warm spot when you know it's that cold out :p .

No snow here yet, I know all of us Westsiders are cringing at the thought of loony drivers out in the snow and ice  .

The last time we were at the Potholes we watched a Great Horned Owl getting mobbed by crows (in the parking lot). We did not do any fishing, just birdwatching that day.

The only thing I've found about the studded tires is they work better on a packed snow surface, all this transitional stuff just means I'm going to repeatedly bruise my hip in the same place if I don't lose the clipless pedals. The riding can be excellant if you pick your moments but my comuting days from Wenatchee to Quincy are over .... .
1bluehill, I've been told you can mtn. bike out at Quincy Lakes area in the winter, do you know anything about this?

norsehabanero

been thinking about studded tires, i rode last week and my eyes froze
went nd bought a pair of clear snow goggles to try,

FlowerBlossom

And tomorrow we might get snow. Depends on the forecast, of course. ;)

1bluetrek

Hey pyeyo,I haven't been out to the quincy lakes area, so I'm not sure whats out there for riding, lots of room to ride out in the potholes area tho.

Hey East, ever try riding the columbia wildlife refuge? All kinds of birds and deer out there. Also, you may want to check out the Othello Sandhill Crane festival, someone from Yakima I think told me that they had a ride last year but I havent checked into it much. If you look it up online, you may be able to find a name to contact.
Oh yeah! it snowed some more last night (wed)? or thursday, What day is it? I hate this shift! Anyway, its right around 15 outside right now. Brrrrrrrrrrrrr!

I have been to the Columbia Wildlife Refuge, but not ridden there. We had to go take a look at the scablands. It's been a long time since we went, perhaps we need to think about visiting again.

I could not find anything on an organised ride in connection with the festival, but apparently there are tours which are conducted on bikes, so that could be of interest. There's both geological and birding tours if I've interpreted it correctly.
