In looking at the Shimano 'line up' for mountain bikes, is there really any difference between their Altus, Acera and Alivio groups?? Could I ask the same of the Tiagra and Sora road groups??

If I had to pick ONE of these groups, I would go with Alivio as a MINIMUM! An upgrade to the "LX" would be even better. I tend to buy year old pieces from Nashbar to help with my cost outlay. As long as it works on my bike, it stays on my bike till it doesn't work.

Altus is the entry level mountain component from Shimano. Alivio is better. It costs slightly more, of course.
Acera is somewhere in between Altus and Alivio.

Altus and Acera are a toss up, and both are very entry level.
Alivio is a bit better. More aluminum than plastic and steel.
Tiagra is measurably better than Sora.

Right. If the question was between Tiagra and 105, the differences would have been fairly minor. Mostly finish and small weight benefits to 105. Between Tiagra and Sora they are significant in both mode of operation, durability and weight.

I looked briefly at a bike with, I think, Sora, and as I recall the shifters sucked compared to 105 and up. What's the Tiagra shifter like?

Why is it that Sheldon Brown touts Sora as one of Shimano's best offerings? He knows far more than anyone here.
