View Full Version : How long to loose your edge?

I've just had ten days off the bike. I was out of town at a work conference. Didn't take the bike, didn't exercise and drank/ate heartily and probably gained a kilo or two.

Fast forward to monday, my commute to work nearly killed me, my knees ache and I'm making stupid mistakes all the time. I figured that week of indulgence has made me soft, lost my edge and condition; just enough to notice.

Unless I'm just delusional about my pre-break form?

Anyone else?

Misjudging traffic flow and timing of light changes. Nothing too scary.

You might be right about my suck-age.

jetbike, how old are you? meaning that the older you are, the longer it will take to recover from anything...

I think the whole ruptured internal organ thing may have an impact on your riding. I am not a medical professional, but that is my assessment.

On topic (?): my edge is lost every morning. Or when I'm sleeping I guess. First couple minutes I'm on my bike my thighs flashpump, then it's all good. Reading traffic here is never difficult unless tourists are involved. Then it's impossible.

There should be a group for recovering Straightedgers. I got out of the scene when the "Hardline" scene started coming up; Vegan Reich, and bombing Burger Kings and whatever was too weird for me.

Buuuut, to the OP, afer about 4 days, I feel like I'm sucking wind when I start riding again.

That used to be me, but I was doing it for fitness reasons. I also didn't drink/smoke/etc cause I was Mormon. I hung out with a bunch of straigh edgers, but I never claimed edge since I was living that way as a result of my religious beliefs. It didn't seem right to claim edge. I'm glad cause as soon as I left the Mormon church I started drinking. :D

What I really came here to say is:

Don't push me cause I'm close to the edge
I'm trying not to lose my head, ah huh-huh-huh
say what?
It's like a jungle sometimes it makes me wonder
How I keep from going under

i'll never stop loving the minor threat, though.

in the 80's, i was proud to be sXe with X's and all... it was just another part of the punk rock scene and other punkers accepted you.. cuz until Slapshot came around, nobody was getting in anybody's face...

but then all these weird jock christian/mormon kids thought that they too could be sXe and be rad... but really they were just acting like meatheads and embarrassing all the OG kids... and i stopped telling people i was sXe cuz i fugging hated those dudes..

now, after 20+ years of staying true, i'm fully willing to say, i've got straightedge

Completely by happenstance, I've recently found myself hanging out with a whole cartload of sXe kids from Philly. Probably the calmest group of people I know, at least compared to NJ sXers. They can be a bit provincial.

But OP, I lose my edge if I'm off my bike for a day - I suddenly find myself inexplicably frightened of traffic, where as two days ago, I was sliding under tractor trailers. Or something that cool. It goes away after about 15 miles, I find. Or a day of mild commuting.

Learn the difference between lose and loose first.

e.g your mom is loose for the lose.

For every day you take off it'll take 2 days to get it back. Some people can get it back quicker but that's the general rule.
