So, there's a cross race coming up near Ottawa, ON on Sunday. We just got our first dump of snow yesterday, so it looks like it might be a snowy race (if it isn't canceled.) I went for a test ride last night in the snow with a 26"x1.5" slick front tire and a 26"x1.35" schwalbe cx pro nobby tire in the back. It seemed pretty good, although a little slippery at times. I was impressed with how smooth everything felt covered in snow. I'm used to getting really kicked around riding on grass with my cx bike. On the snow with my tires at a higher pressure, it felt surprisingly smooth.
I'm not sure what to use on the weekend. What kind of tires do you guys use for racing CX in the snow? Nobby? Smooth and big? High pressure, low pressure?
