Texas - The Shopping Thread: Texas Edition!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
The Holidays are coming, so we're supposed to start thinking of what to get everyone else, so fess up, what have you all been buying for yourself instead... ;)
It's only fair that I'll start:
Ritchey WCS 4-Axis stem (aluminum)
Performance Triflex Tight (part of my 'ride into the winter' plan)
2x Vittoria Rally tubular tires (learning to clue those things soon)
new CO2 inflator (after losing my last one somewhere on Independance a few blocks north of Legacy)
oh, and a NOS 06 Fuji Team Issue WCS edition frameset. :D
-- Got to sell my Flyte frame w/ Reynolds Ouzo Pro fork (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?goto=newpost&t=364484) to help pay for this one. If anyone is looking for a cheap frameset to build a new crit bike from, let me know. ;)

Well, it was a few weeks back, but I think I officially started my holiday purchasing with the new Fuji Team RC. That said, now I see this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&Item=110195445267&Category=98084&_trksid=p3907.m29
Had I seen that, I probably would have used some of my vast collection of frequent flier miles to head out to lovely New Jersey to look into this. If only my wife was rode the same frame size, I'd give her the gift of an almost new Team RC and go for that one :D
ETA: Here's to hoping that the weather in DFW clears up for tomorrow. Several of the PBA rides (the ones I can hang with anyhow) were canceled today and I ended up doing a few Spinerval workouts. Looking forward to trying out the new cold weather gear I picked up yesterday morning.

My wife will be getting me a Garmin 705 for a late Christmas present. There is no firm date but the website says 1st quarter of 08.

wow, some nice shopping lists there, my list for this year.
freddy fenders
planet bike superflash tail light
Once I get the Fuji built up and paid for, I'm thinking about putting a pair of wood fenders on my Barracuda Mk.I steel frame. Something like a light wood with a darker stripe down the center or something like that. The bike already weighs 25.5lbs, whats a few extra at that point.

I'm buying yet another tool chest so now I finally won't have tools in boxes. I outgrew my previous one, so I figured I'd add another rolling unit to match the existing rolling unit. I also plan to add a low profile jack to get the lowrider truck up in the air. Currently the only way to lift the truck is through the back.
Oh, and I guess I will buy my family members some gift cards or something.

I bought a Cycleops Fluid2 trainer...and a Garmin Nuvi for my car!
So I'm flying down the backside of one of the hills near my inlaws appartment on the Tarmac S-Works I was borrowing while out here in SoCal and my phone rings. Thinking it might be urbanknight wondering why I missed the start of the SFVBC ride I pull off and check the voice mail. Instead it is RBM Frisco telling me the Ritchey WCS 4-axis I ordered is in. :)
I also need to exchange the Triflex tights, the pair I got has loose threads from the stitching everywhere!!
No bites on my current frameset yet. I figured $250 + shipping if needed would be fair for a year old frame, full carbon fork, stem, handlebars and seatpost.

I got an older model Giro Atmos (the USPS model, I think 2004?) for my birthday on December 17th... but I can't use it until then, it's just sitting on a chair, still in its box. I asked for some of the Fizik bar-tape with the gel padding, some winter cycling socks, and a Park Tool bike-cleaning set, from my three siblings.

I wasn't supposed to get my Fuji frame till after the new year, but the seller wants it out of his place sooner than later and willing to ship it ahead of complete payment. All the more reason to round up the rest of the $$$ I owe him asap.
What winter socks did you get? I've got a couple pairs of the Defeet Blaze wool socks now that I really like. I need to get something warmer for my head/ears soon. This time of year the coolmax head wrap isn't nearly enough.

I'm asking for the Pearl Izumi Winter Tour Socks... we'll see what I end up with though, when someone goes to Performance Bike without me to pick them out!
I also bought a set of the Travel Trac rollers at Performance recently... and I love them. I rode 35 minutes today in place of our cancelled group ride due to the 40 degree weather and constant rain.

Add to my list above:
Stanley (Lasko) model 655702 Blower Fan (http://www.bizrate.com/fans/lasko-655702-stanley-blower-fan--pid290202917/) to keep me cool this winter when I'm on the trainer. If anyone has been fitted up at Richardson BikeMart Fisco, I think this is the same one they've got up there. Short of opening the side door, figure this was the best idea I've seen yet.

I have to buy my own bike toys. I was in the LBS store on Black Friday getting some stuff for the mixte I'm fixing up to be a commuter. Then this alluring hardware (http://www.flickr.com/photos/fayster/2057694001/) jumped off the rack and I rode it and then I bought it!! It was marked down from $800-ish to $600 (2006 model). So I guess it's my Christmas present to myself.
Of course it rained all weekend so I didn't get to ride!!! grrrrr - now I'm at work and it's gorgeous outside.
By next week I should be one of maybe 3 people in Waco who commutes by bike.
That's a good price for a solid ride there. I'd bet there are more than 3 people in Waco bike communting. But not by much.

I'm building up a Leader cyclocross frame with a full Campy Chorus setup as a possible commuter. Merry Christmas to me. :)
I bought myself the Kinetic fluid trainer from REI yesterday got it for $205.
Other stuff Ive bought myself so far: Montane Featherlite jacket, Sugoi Midzero Zap Tights, PI arm warmers, PI cyclone toe covers.
Salomon Raid Revo 20 (Adventure racing pack) and Inov8 flyroc 310.
Stuff I still want:
I am trying to get a new cinelli stem (x/a or 1/a).
I asked for Neuvation Wheels for x-mas from my mom.
Thats it.

Every time I go looking for clif bars at Costco the only flavors they have are the ones I HATE.
Kevin, killer looking Bianchi there dude. :) Becareful of those brake levers, they'll make you start wanting a Campagnolo group again. ;)
Currently shopping for a full carbon seatpost for my Fuji build. Leaning towards the Ritchey WCS carbon, but unsure about the amount of setback (25mm) for my fit. Anyone have any other good suggestions?

Last time we went to Costco, they had a new variety pack of Clif - they got rid of the green-labeled ones from the packs they used to have (raisin something - the ones me and the wife left for last in every box).
As far as posts, I'm happy with the Ritchey Pro Carbon that came on my bike - I think it's also a 25mm setback, but for me, it's just right, and probably half the cost of the WCS, so maybe worth a try.
If you're really unsure, just order a few from performance and return the ones that don't work - they're pretty good on that stuff (same thing for saddles - the guys always say try it, if you don't like it, return it, no problems).

I am trying to point my wife in the direction of a trainer for my Christmas gift. I need advise though as to what kind to send her looking for. She told me she saw a "fluid" trainer for over $200 and quickly nixed that idea. Any thoughts?
Thanks

Start the 'well, maybe we can save for it' talk. She'll get sick of it and tell you to just buy it already. It works, trust me.
I like my Mag trainer, forget what brand it is right now though. It has the remote which I can change the resistance on the fly. If you're planning to use spinerval DVDs or similar I believe that's what they recommend.
Picked up my Ritchey stem tonight from RBM Frisco. 100mm weighed in at 120g! :)
At performance I returned the Forte Pro OS stem I bought while in LA. Decent stem (149g for 100mm) for the price. And exchanged the windfront tights I had with all the loose threads.
Also bought a Ritchey Comp seatpost (testing to see if the setback wouldn't be too much) but it's too short to use. Going with a carbon WCS instead most likely.
Also got to return the cheap Forte GT2 tire I bought. Grabbed the wrong size after deciding to go with the GT2 instead of the GT2/k. Whoops!
Their trainer block for the front tire is onsale right now for half price (abourt $5!), so yea, bought one of those too!
Went to Home Depot and got a set of hex head 3/8 socket heads. 4mm to 10mm, just the tool I needed (the 10mm) to remove my Campy Ultra-Torque cranks.
Hey Kevin.... you must be doing something right to have all those really cool bikes!!! :-D

LOL!!! Thanks! My bikes are nothing compared to others on this forum. I have 4 bikes but none of them are very high-end. There are some folks that have a crankset that cost more than my Bianchi or my Fuji:eek:

I'm pretty much looking for clipless pedals/shoes... but don't even know what I want yet. It'll probably end up being an after Xmas gift... or not happen this year... cause I don't really expect anyone to get them for me.
Also need a new helmet... something I need to look into more, and would probably need to try on before someone bought it... not likely to happen.
Could use some new shorts... but not necessary... current ones ARE almost 10 years old though. But they don't get used all that often.
Other than that, biking purchases are on hold for other hobbies. I've spent too much lately on the bikes.

I agree with cuda on the road pedal recommendation. But for Mtn pedals: Time ATACS or Crank Bros egg beaters.
My first pair of ATACs lasted 6 years of trails, beach riding, commuting, and long distance charity rides before needing to be rebuilt. The cleats, of course, did not last as long.

He has to get that LT1 powered S10 of his back on the road. You see in our truck club we have several members (myself included) that suffer from a sickness. We have these trucks that haven't been seen in a while...it has actually gotten to the point where we have gone several months without any one's project making it out to our monthly meets. :o

Beauty ride! I thought we were going to build up that Azuki this winter? Did you get too anxious? How do you like the Regal? How does it compare with a cut-out saddle, if you have ridden one of those?
I just picked up these skewers for my road rig:

My mountain bike drivetrain has over 6K miles on it so I got a new chain, cassette, cables and housing. I am now looking on EBay for a used set of XT square taper cranks.

Thanks! I really wanted to build upthe Azuki but, 1) I'm too lazy and 2) RBM made me a deal on the Bianchi that I could not refuse.
I love the Regal saddle. It's definitely different from my Toupe but after finding the "sweet" spot on it I can ride it all day long.

I have been thinking about it. I would do it as a single speed and not fixed. I have the CX tires that the bike came with in my spare parts box.
I have bullhorns, levers, and a front break on the X-mas list, so I can use my IRO on the road. If Santa comes through then I will give you a call Kevin and we can put in some training miles on the fixies.

kevin, that's good to hear. I've been running a toupe for 8 months now but just scored a white regal ti for the CAAD9 build. Without even trying too hard it will break the 16lb. barrier, thanks in part to my main present to myself: slightly used AC350s, with the rear hub rebuilt to a DT RR1.1 rim and DT revolution spokes (1385g with rim tape and mike garcia's 65g bolt-on skewers, so back down to 1350 with veloplugs)
the best part? $300 shipped
