Foo - Boiling an egg in a microwave = bad idea. (Or: how I had to clean up egg guts.)

I came back from a 20 mile ride (gorgeous day in Seattle today!) and forgot to drink some protein powder when I got in. I hit the shower, then sat at my computer and ate an apple.
OH NOES! I then remembered that I forgot my protein! But eating an apple and protein powder at the same time gives me gas. Dunno why, but there it is.
The only other source of protein in the house were eggs. But it's already been 40 minutes since the ride and I didn't want to wait another 15-20 for water to boil. Protein is best when taken within 30 minutes of exercise, correct?
So I wrapped a single egg in three layers of paper towels and stuck in it the microwave for 30 seconds on medium power. (Yeah I know they can explode so I though I was being clever and it wouldn't happen to me.)
But nooo, the egg had other ideas. It exploded with a loud bang, and slimed the microwave despite the three layers of paper towels.
I had to clean up the mess and then drink my protein powder anyway. My stomach is making funny noises and my kitchen smells like eggs. The smell just doesn't want to go away.
On a bright note, I have some pics from my ride and I'll post them as soon as I transfer them off the phone.

...you could have cracked the egg open, and put it in a bowl...

Or put the egg in water and stuck it in there for like 7 minutes, maybe.

Can't do that, either. A co-worker did that and ended up going to the e-room after she opened the microwave door.

Yes, eggs and microwaves are bad news. But if you put a light bulb in a glass of water (just submerge the metal bit) and stick it in the microwave, it will light up.

Really? I did it once. . . interesting.
put cold water with egg in it on stove. bring to boil. boil for one minute. turn off heat and let stand for 10 minutes. dip in ice water bath to cool. peel and eat. this cooks the egg fully but keeps the heat low enough to keep the yolk from emitting sulfur dioxide or somesuch, and turning gray. will give you a firm egg with a firm yellow center. increase boiling time just a bit, or let them stand in the hot water a few minutes longer if the eggs are large or if you have more than one egg.
You should know that microwaves are only for CD's and cats. What were you thinking?

how big of a pot are you using for a single egg that it takes 15-20 minutes to boil water?
my wife has some sort of microwave egg poacher (http://www.amazon.com/NordicWare-64702-Microwave-Poacher-4-c/dp/B00004W4UR). you might want to look into one of those.

Personaly I like my egg yolks raw. Only way to have them and nice and quick too. I've been consuming raw eggs for YEARS and I haven't been sick once. If your still a little squemish then a raw egg in a glass of milk with some vanilla esscence and sugar to taste if nessecary is great.
Also you can buy specialist egg cookers which will either poach or cook your eggs in the shell and they only take a few minutes and they are done.

There are some mistakes that are made almost exclusively by college students and kids under the age of 6. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess you fall into the former category....
I should warn you that you will encounter problems if you put buttered toast in the toaster :D

You can cook egg in the microwave, but you have to scramble/wisk the raw egg first otherwise it'll still pop, not one pop but rather like popcorn, resulting in bits of egg all over the microwave. If you scramble it first, it'll cook fine into a sorta egg soufflé but the container will be hard to clean.
A good variant is to put a slice of baloney in the bottom of a small container so it forms a cup, and with the egg in it. The baloney curls up and becomes sorta like bacon at the edges and the egg does it's soufflé thing so you can hold this in a paper towel to eat. You can also add a little milk, cheese, pepper/cayenne. Makes a tasty fluffy treat, easy to make, cheap, good, container stays easy to clean. Win-win.

if you nuke water and an egg doesn't the egg litterally explode, with enough force to open the door?
:) I've heard of these things happening - but more with people boiling eggs on top of the stove and forgetting them and all of a sudden BOOM!
:)
Make a scrambled egg mixture (for nuking them - and I do this all the time at work - I crack the egg into my microwave container - whip with a fork a couple of seconds - add NO water or milk (not a fan), all I add is a tiny piece of butter) and nuke for about 45 secs and stir - do this again one or more times (depending on how many eggs you've decided to scramble) - and they turn out very nice. BTW - slightly undercooked is better as if you Nuke till cooked thru/and ultimately dry - then you've got some strong smelling eggs - they're OK, but not as good.
And btw - these turn out pretty darn good!

Also, knowing how exacting measurements are very important to foo, I made you guys a pie-chart so you can have a good idea of my enjoyment:

Guess I should have label that chart "damn!"

that is from teh American Egg Associaton or somesuch. Works well. My wife has now put me in charge of boiling eggs for deviled eggs at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Suchs that my superior intellect and intelligence = egg boiler.:D
that egg on bologna looks good. real good, dang.

just prick a small hole in the egg before you nuke it. Most egg cookers have you do the same thing. Eggs can explode if you boil them without venting them.
