Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Big Man Shants

Hello fellow clydes. Here's the situation, recently I've been riding my bike more and more. With the increased use I'm realizing that my current practice of riding in jeans, t-shirt, and sneakers isn't really going to cut it for me. One thing I'm defenitely doing is going to a clipless setup, but for the future I would like to get some technical riding clothing...but I'm also pretty vain. Anybody know of a technical riding shant that will fit a guy with a 44" waist? I thought the Chromes looked good but their XL only goes up to 37".

Oh and sorry if this has been discussed before, I used the search function but to no avail.

Call it regional ignorance, but what is a Shant? (understand I am from the right side of the country) Do you mean short? Also, you usually have to throw vanity out when wearing cycling appereal as a Clydesdale.

Shant = longer than short, shorter than pants

At least that's my guess. Kinda like a spork in a cafeteria.

you actually have a number of options. LL Beans has cycling clothing that is casual. I have never had much luck with padded shorts, but I think everyone tries them...

A number of companies have lycra shorts that will fit. Pearl Izumi, Boure, Nashbar, Performance Bike, Aerotech and more. The problem is that with many of the companies sizing can differ from model to model. So you buy something, if you like it, you hope they don't change it. I mostly use Boure Pro shorts , but they are pricey. There is also Aerotech, but I don't care for the pad they use much. Best thing to do with Pearl Izumi is to go to one of their factory stores.

Btw, where lycra is concerned, stick to black. Always.

I don't know if they're long enough for your tastes, but they do have XXXL sizing (43-45" waist).

I found some knee length shorts that are a loose fit but have a lycra liner and chamois. You can also use shorts with no liner and then buy liners at REI for 25$.

Yeah, what happened to knickers? Shants sounds like an article of clothing to make sure one doesn't spil one's surroundings. . .

Oh, and I was operating under the assumption that a shant = knickers = capri for me. Maybe there should be a vote to end the damnable confusion.

The correct term is "manpris" :)

If you, or someone you know, is handy with a sewing machine you can just chop down a nice pair of woolies or any other pants of your choosing.

You might want to do a search in the Fixed Gear forum also, there have been discussions on this topic. Be prepared to see some absolutely silly prices though. Me, I wear bibs and a nice pair of rock climbing or mtb shorts.

Chrome manpris fit up to a male 39" waist, snug fit for sure, in the XL size. Also if you have muscular legs they will be snug in the legs as well, but they feel really good on your person. Target sells microfiber shorts in many different varieties that work just as well though, some in the 3/4 "basketball" length which are good for wicking moisture and are CHEAP! Very comfy up probably a 42" waist.

Those don't look long enough to be "capris for men" or knickers. Those just look like mountain bike shorts to me.

I found some BDU shants at an Army & Navy store. Alternatively, you can buy some regular BDUs and chop the legs a bit and add a drawstring or some other device to cinch the cuff.
