Living Car Free - Carfree THANKSGIVING!

Anybody here do a carfree Thanksgiving? Or do anything especially bike-y for Thanksgiving? Or give thanks for your bike?






A friend and I rode 150mi from CoMO to STL for our turkey. Needless to say, we were hungry.

Rode a bus in Wednesday evening and biked to my brother's place. Heading back Friday. My brother had to use his car though, to pick up other people for thanksgiving diner who don't own a car.

My wife and I took our bikes down to the bus, bused across town, then rode to our friends' place for dinner. Then rode home.

Other than the cold (My wife's coldest ride yet!) it wasn't too bad.

Anybody here do a carfree Thanksgiving? Or do anything especially bike-y for Thanksgiving? Or give thanks for your bike?



Not carfree unless you count that I drove a truck:p as far as "bike-y" I installed two racks (need 3 more) in my shop to hang bikes from the wall, repacked the headset and crank on my wife's Raleigh Colt, and put a folding basket on one side of my Staiger utility bike (the other basket is due in this week).

I didn't drive or ride in a car on thanksgiving, however, on wednesday I drove to the house where I spent thanksgiving.

My big news is that I used thanksgiving day as a chance to adjust and test my electric bike, and found that it was working well. I didn't really feel up to the task of riding a 35 mile round trip to an 8-hour work day regularly, without the electric assist.

This morning, however, I had no problem making the commute in to work. By my estimate, the motor provided about 50% of my power and I provided the other 50%... and my average speed was somewhere around 20 mph despite some serious headwinds and uphills.

Thanksgiving for us was about a month and a half ago, but we rode 350kms over 4 days to get to our dinner and back.

No driving yesterday. My 20 year old son didn't either, suprisingly. I haven't driven since Tuesday.

Nope. It was our turn to travel this year. We drove to Waukesha to visit with my sister in law.

Not anymore than most other days. Haven't used a motor vehicle in a week. Rode everywhere, including grocery shopping, 50 mile recreational ride on Monday & to work on Tuesday. Walked to coffee and library on Wednesday. Rode 21 miles on Thanksgiving day and walked 3 mile round trip to coffee shop. Walked to coffee shop and fabric store (3 miles total) and then to library to check out lastest posts on the forum.

I had a Thanksgiving free Thanksgiving, and I recommend it to everyone. I got a HUGE amount done at home, including an overhaul of my winter bike and finishing several difficult shop projects. Today I got my boot repaired and got resupplied in the kitchen. Nice to have a day off finally.

Meh. I had fun with new friends, and made more new friends. Definitely time well spent. :) Oh... and the new friends I made are having a second thanksgiving celebration on Sunday, and we're invited to that one as well. ;)

I even had a bike-free Thanksgiving. I walked to the post office and by Shipley's Doughnuts, stopping to watch the fish in the creeks, and that was it. The rest of the day was at home. My thanksgiving dinner was Columbus style: spaghetti.

Black Friday I did pull out the stops and pedaled in the 42 degree weather to Wild Oats Market.

I had a car light Thanksgiving unfortionately. I was supposed to go to my g/f grandparents house 100 miles away. Her cars brakes went out a month ago so she has been just driving my old Nissan. My car broke down about 2 miles from my house on the way out of town to her grandparents. After an hour in the rain we finally got it started and decided not to risk the trip and limped the 2 miles home. We ended up going to Shoneys (good thanksgiving food though) down the road from our house.

It was kinda disappointing though since Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday since it is more about family then the crap-shot Christmas holiday which is all about buying junk for people and being materialistic. I think I am boycotting the presents thing for christmas from now on.

My brother and his fiancee put on Thanksgiving this year. They don't have a roasting pan and other turkey-specific items, so she came over the night before and we hooked up the trailer to her bike loaded with the stuff for the meal preparation. I rode over to their place on Thanksgiving and brought the trailer full of stuff home with me. It was very nice.

I ended up helping people I barely know cook dinner in someone else's kitchen. :D

No family problems, no mess to clean up, and the food turned out great. ;)

Spent the entire day holed up reading a book. The weather is horrible.. cold, icy streets, snow on the ground. Took a few breaks for eating though :)

Thanksgiving day dawned sunny and frosty in the Seattle area, and having no kitchen responsibilities this year at either of the two get-togethers I was invited to, I decided to do the rounds by bike. The first leg, 22 miles from Issaquah to my friend's house in north Seattle, was a bit nippy at first but delightful with the sunshine and minimal road traffic. Had a great afternoon there, then near 5PM took off on the bike for a short 6 miles to an evening get-together with other friends. These folks had small children so I expected it to end early, but at 9:30PM it was still in full swing and I suddenly realized I'd better start back home. Got lazy and threw the bike on the bus for most of the homebound leg, but had a splendid (if chilly) ride for the last 5 miles under the gorgeous full moon. A great day!
