Cycling for a fit future Europe

Taking the bike to work, a group of MEPs wheeled into Strasbourg for the first plenary session of the European Parliament following the summer break, having set out from Brussels on the 27th of August.

Dutch Green party rider Kathalijne Maria Buitenweg: "The idea of this initiative is to get some attention on the interest in riding a bicycle, because most car (trips) at the moment are (for) less than 7 kilometres; that means that people can also easily take a bicycle."

The marathon to Europe's common future is on the agenda this Wednesday: the Parliament will debate the proposed EU constitution after its presentation by the European Convention Chairman Valery Giscard d'Estaing.

Mmmm.... Possers, some people will do anything for publicity and get their picture taken, especially politicains, this is kinda like the "Kiss the baby" at elections.

Incidently, the photo sets a bad example for cyclists,no one is wearing a helmet. :(

Yes, they should have helmets. Nice idea though. Maybe they could collect a certain number iof Euros per kilometer and use to it to reduce the deadweight tax burden of EU programmes.

It is interesting the comment on the typical auto trek of only 7 KM. Easily done on a bike instead, or walking.

Let's not get into that.

Europeans and Asians have a long history of using the bike as transportation for everyone and they also have the lowest rates of injury for all road users, so lets just celebrate that they have thier priorities straight and the car doesn't get away with the mass destuction that it does in North America.
