One of the odder things about living in my part of the world (besides Trick or Treating on Thursday night every year), is that the first day of deer hunting season (with guns), means a day off from school. :eek: Not being a hunter, I've always thought this was kind of peculiar.

Do we pay our teachers so little that they need to go out and whack a deer or two to get meat for the freezer?

Are we hoping the most poorly behaved youngsters will depart to begin their eternal rest whilst tramping through the underbrush after discarding their orange reflective vests?

Are there any such other (how shall I say this charitably?) local anomalies in the area where you live?

And last year when it snowed everyone freaked out and there was a snow day for schools. wtf?

While I`m not a hunter either I think its neccesary and acceptable. Why should we look down upon someone elses tradition because their passtime is different than ours? Think about how cool it would be to take the children out for a family ride on the first day of "cycling season", if there was such a thing.

The deer population is out of control here in Pa and I see hundreds of deer carcasses litering the roads every year. One of my greatest fears is a deer going through the windsheild of my wifes car during her morning commute. Hunting season will hardly make a dent in the deer population in our state anyways. I am thankful for hunters and I have repect for them and their sport.

Living in the suburbs it didn't even make for an excused absence. Not that it makes a difference, tons of kids still take the day off.

I don't have any problem with people hunting. I'll bet 50 years ago, when the school districts weren't all suburbanized, a good proportion of the children actually did go out hunting. This is truly an anachronism at this point, and I'd be very surprised if more than 3% of the students and teachers are out there hunting.

Point taken. But if 3% of kids go hunting and 97% of kids don`t go hunting on opening day then 100% of kids are thankful for hunting while only 3% of parents feel the same;):D

My brother's family - wife, and two children completed their bow hunting classes this past Summer/Fall and got their permits for turkey, I believe - perhaps some deer permits). Know my SIL has a gun too and I'm pretty sure the kids will be involved too. They like it. My brother is the successful hunter and gets the deer and turkeys. And they have them butchered and consume them as well (I HATE venison - always hated it - not cause it's bambi - just don't care for the flavor - and for a while there my father was very successful of bringing home the doe for ye old meat chest. ICK).

I mean I've gone hunting with my father, pheasant hunting with our dogs, but nothing was ever shot. :)

In the county I lived in as as young teenager (Barry County Mich.) they gave us the first day of deer season off so as to keep the "Drunks with Guns" from shooting at the kids waiting for the bus. (No I'm not kiddding!!) The first day of deer season in southern Michigan is a HUGE Party and some (Not all of course) "Deer Hunters" will shoot at anything that moves. After a 11 y.o. was shot and killed for wearing a light brown coat,the school board thought that keeping us kids indoors was a better idea than trying to tell the hunters not to shoot at "Everything"!!

My neighbor painted "COW" in bright purple paint on his cows one year....Lost two with the explanation... "It Looked like a Buck to me!!"

I drove a Tan 69 Olds Cutlass in the late 70's...Missing the drivers side door glass,blown out door panels and four nice .30/.30 holes in both of the drivers side doors...."It looked like a Deer to Me!!"

I got a lot of good natured grief for owning that car!!

Holy week here - the whole thing. People hoof it over to some shrine. 30, 40 kilometers of hiking, or more. An amazing amount of people go.

It snows every 6 years or so here. That's why.

Last year's was a pretty good one, too...for Tucson.

We were just on our way up to Rochester yesterday morning. It was 6:30, and the lad was driving. I saw a deer that was expired on the side of the highway. A little after 8:00 I called one of my friends to report where it was. I left a message, because nobody picked up. Today, when I saw him, I asked him about the deer. He said it was still a little warm. I imagine he got at least 20 pounds of venison from it. This is the closest I come to deer hunting. :o

I grew up in a small town in the mountains of Arizona... not only did we get the first day of hunting season off of school... it wasn't at all unusual to have trucks in the parking lot the day before already fully loaded up for the hunt... guns, ammo and all. ;)

I saw that. I'd laugh harder, but I know from my days back in the Navy that I'd do better with a .45 than a rifle. :o

In San Anto, we get a day off for Battle of Flowers, which is a parade that is done during this two-week downtown block party called Fiesta (how bleeding original) to celebrate our diversity and commemorate the Battle of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto. Talk about a party - half of downtown (since its just getting hot) smells of rancid beer for the most part, and is blocked to vehicle traffic (yay bike!).

Totally cool the first time, including the annual Night in Old San Antonio, where you get to cram a million people into a two-block area that has food, music, beer, and narrow walkways. I got pulled and given a sobriety check after going, and I'm a teetotaler.

I should be calling my brother...he's usually really good for stocking my freezer with all kinds of yummy things from venison. moose, and smoked fish.

That's basically the rule in Georgia. If it's snowing, at all, or even if it's just a reasonable possibility that it may snow, the entire educational system shuts down (insert joke about GA's graduation percentage here).

When I was in school in northern Maine, we would get 2 weeks off every fall for the potato harvest.

Where I grew up you could get a "farm permit" when you turned 14. It allowed you to drive alone during day-light hours unlike the other 14yo's who had to drive with an adult. Oh, you had to be a farmer to get one. Kids routinely got excused days off to help with the harvest.
