South African gunpowder being blown off with my SA58 in disgustingly high quantities for tiny fractions of what it now costs.

I miss the smell of fresh rain on the pavement. Rain smells good on anything, even the roads. :)

My ex's cologne.

Ugh. That boy took a bath in it, when he put it on. Clogged my nose, gave me a headache ... and the cologne was a good brand - just worn very wrong...

Darn you Siu...

My grandmother would bake bread on a nearly daily basis... this would be intermixed with the smell of fresh ground coffee and tea which always seemed to be at the ready.

Dove soap... it was my grandmother's favourite and for the longest time after her passing I could not smell this without crying as it reminded me so much of someone I loved beyond words.

My Aunt's cinnamon buns... she used to bake them by the dozens and fill them full of love...and freshly churned butter.

I miss my High School woodshop. That was my introduction to blue collar trades. I get the sawdust smell from working, but I do miss the smell of the old musty room. I was so happy to finally be learning how to work with power tools. Those were good times.

aaaahh-ooooohhh, didn't consider the good things ...

My grandmother's casserole of rice pudding, my other grandmothers pan of german pastries :D

My Mom's smelling up the house with her Thanksgiving turkey or her meatloaf that now bothers my stomach (:(). But all yummers and <snnnnnniffffff> yum.

And lilac was my grandmothers favorite - which is now mine. In fact getting ready to shower and when I come out - I will be a lavendar babe. :)

The smell of a pine forest.

A northern pine forest in the fall. The smell of spring. Leaves after they first fall. Fresh air after a snow storm.

Yeah, there are a few things I miss - but if I left the tropics I would miss:

1. Getting stuck behind a pineapple truck - talk about drooling!
2. Cerviche
3. Rainforest during a rain.
4. Soaking in a rainforest river while the rain is lightly falling in the early morning.

Pine being cut, in an old friend's woodshop

I was six the first time I went there. I'm there every chance I get now. He's a retired carpenter and the guy who showed me I wanted to know how to do that stuff.

I miss the "stench" of my late father's dresser drawers and his cologne. My dad's clothes would smell of the particle board the dresser was made of. I only miss it because I miss my father. He passed in 1996.

I also miss the smell of plumerias in Hawaii. It reminds me of good times with my family and cousins over there.

I always liked the smell of the fumes at a gas station in the morning. The new nozzles must make a better seal than they used to, because I don't notice the smell as much anymore.

The ozone-y smell right before rain.

The forest.

I miss the smell of the ocean. I lived in Bremerhaven, Germany, for four years. It's a port town. The fishing vessels would bring in the daily catch, and there was this little shack that would buy fish, and fillet it, fry it, and serve it with small red potatoes.... oh it was heaven.

I miss the smell of my mom. When I was little and used to cry and she'd hold me and I'd get into a ball and my whole body would be held by her. Completely enveloped by her. I felt so protected and all the bad stuff would go away. I'd peer out from between her arms and look - then hide again. I miss my mom. :(

<wipes a tear> Two grandmothers, yes, but one ultimate favorite - and I guess I named them both when I was just learning to talk - big gramma, lil gramma. Big gramma was (and is still alive) a burly german woman, can do it all type who could still strike terror into my father even when my father was in his 50's (but she was a wonderfully fair woman - who enjoyed all her grandchildren), but it was my lil gramma, my mother's Mom who was the fav. She smelled of lavender - which I discovered I luv as well.

She smelled of lavendar, of fresh air, of rice pudding just out of the oven and of adventures. She would take us kids and walk up to the corner store - that smelled of fresh bread - because it was a bakery too - and we'd get penny/nickel candy and walk back to her house - which was in the city of Williamsport, PA - a city - and we were all used to living in an extremely rural town, with our "neighbor's" being swamps, old cow fields and fields of trees and raspberry bushes. She was a very special woman who was an exceptional person who introduced us to some wonderful things <3

It's amazing how a simple smell can bring back all those memories and the fond feelings that we thought were gone forever, isn't it? :o

My grandmother was the sweetest of souls and could strike terror in the heart of any small boy... all she had to do was say, in her sweet Scottish voice...

"I'm so disappointed in you".

It made one wish for a good old fashioned beating and I made it a point to never disappoint her.

I miss her every day.

That rose-scented perfume she always wore. Nearly 30 years since I lost her, but that distinctive rose perfume is still so powerfully evocative. A few weeks ago I happened to walk by a woman wearing it, and the scent stopped me in my tracks, all the memories flooding back. I do miss her so.

i guess hte thing about "grandma smells" is that mine pretty much raised me after my mom passed away when i was 3yo. she was the only person who i felt was like a mom to me. ahhhh. those smells, and the wonderful food aroma's coming from her kitchen are great.

Oooh! I'm a "smells" person. I associate almost everything with a smell, and I relive events in my mind when I smell something similar.

There are so many smells I miss, but a few in particular. About 20 years ago, catalytic converters were made mandatory on new cars, and since then virtually all cars here have them. But the old exhaust fumes smelled so good in certain cases. Sweet and almost fruity. I know it sounds weird... Better engines, cleaner fuel and catalytic converters took away that old smell. Today, cars just smell bad. Like bitter somehow.

Same thing with diesel engines. Loved the smell of old, dirty diesel trucks and dump trucks. New diesels don't smell much at all.

And one smell I don't miss as such, because I can just ride out to the airport and get a lungful, but still love, is that of jet turbine exhaust. Again, a very sweet smell. Half the fun of going to an airport is the smell! :)

When I was little I used to sit on the curb behind a car that was warming up to breathe in the smell. :)

Oh heyyy. Maybe THAT's was wrong with me. :(

CdCf, I can relate. I'm not sure if I like the smell of exhaust from 2 stroke motorbikes, however it floods back a ton of memories from when I was a kid riding thru the hills in our area. Same with older boat motors (memories of my father and I fishing in Northern Saskatchewan) and snowmobiles (also childhood memories during the winter). These memories are all from 30 years ago. It's amazing how smells can bring you right back to that time in an instant.
