I don't mean to steal someone elses' thunder, but someone said (maybe it was on this forum) that a kid came up to some guy working on his tandem and said, "Is that a real bike?"

When someone asks me that question, and I get it alot, I always say, " yeah, its a lot easier than pushing it"

After several flats and a failed pump, my wife/stoker and I had to walk the last 5 miles home. A guy looked at our very flat rear tire and asked "you got a flat?", the only reply that came to mind was "no sir, it's such a nice day we thought we'd take our tandem for a walk".

The guy laughed and offered to drive us to our house in his pick up. We declined of course as we thought the walk home would teach us the lesson of "always check your equipment AND your back up equipment".

Since our tandem has the stoker up front in a recumbent riding position, we get a lot of questions and comments from folks in cars and on other bikes. Not all of them are dumb, but a lot of them are.

To wit: "What is that thing?" We usually reply to that one with, "Unless that is a trick question, the answer is a bicycle."

"Who does the steering on that thing?" Our reply, "The person holding the handlebars."

"Where did you get that thing?" Our reply, "K-mart."

"How much did that thing cost?" Our reply, "More than a huffy but less than a Caddy."

We also get the requisite number of comments, such as: "She/He's not pedalling."

"I ain't ever seen one like that." Our reply, "Well, you can no longer say that, can you?"

"That thing looks dangerous." Our reply, "Life is dangerous. You may as well live it and not worry about how dangerous it is."

"I don't think I would ever ride something like that." Our reply, "Thank you."

We do not always reply with sarcasm or smart_ssness. It usually depends on how the question is asked. We get questions from folks who are really interested in our tandem. To them, we are courteous and happy to respond to their questions/comments. :)

Riding in the bike lane one rainy afternoon, I was passing a line of cars lines up for almost three blocks waiting for a light. A woman rolled down here window and said "Hey, thats not fair." It was all I could do not to fall off my bike from laughing.

My wife and I have been trailering, or trail-a-biking (and soon to be tandeming) one or both of our kids to day care or school for 4 years now. I'm surprised at how many of the other parents there seem to conclude that we could not afford a car.

Its partly a cultural thing; some of these people are from asian countries where using bike use really was only for the car-less.

They don't quite get that we are into "less-cars"
