Here's something from Sheldon's site you can try. Maybe you can get it to work to your satisfaction, maybe not, but if you've already got the shifters, chain, cassette, etc. you can try it for free:

you'll need a 9 speed chain as well as cassette.You should be changing that with a new cassette anyways.:D

Try at first the solution Well Biked suggests.
As for the other suggestions to change chain and cassette to 9-speed, I suspect the original poster has a busted shifter but a good cassette. If that's the case, it is perfectly sensible to change the shifters to 9-speed ones (take advantage of the break), and to wait until the cassette is toast before replacing cassette and chain for 9-speed ones.
