I just ordered a new Redline conquest frame and I'm going to build it up with parts I have laying around, but there are a few other things I need to buy. Since this is my first cross bike, I was hoping to get some advice.
Here are the parts I currently have...
105 Front and Rear Dérailleur (9 sp)
105 STI shifters
Tiagra compact crankset
Sugino BB
Junky a-class wheels w/ ultegra 12-25 cassette
Avid shorty 6 canti brakes
Specialized road handlebar
Specialized Alias Saddle
Parts to buy
Headset
Stem
Seatpost
New Wheels (the spoke count is kind of low on my spare set)
I'd prefer to stay somewhat on the inexpensive side for the rest of the build. I'm not saying want I go to very cheap, but what are some good mid-range components good for cross. I plan to race the bike as well as use it for winter training to avoid dirtying up my road bike. I think I have all parts accounted for. If not, please let me know.
Thanks
..
[seems like good quality cross stuff]

Personally, I'd go for
good headset (cane creek s6, shamino ultegra, campag centaur, etc.)
cheap strong stem (deda big logo or similar)
cheap strong seatpost (deda metalstick or similar)
good hubs (ultegra/centaur), deep v or v rims (velocity deepv, mavic cxp33, etc), beefy stainless spokes laced 3 cross with brass nipples (I'm probably a little heavier than you at 95kg/210lbs so personal preference here), cheap cassette (it's going to get thrashed so what the hey)
I'd add cross top levers (cheap tektro or similar), change to a quality BB and switch to disc brakes (personal pref. again)

The only Tiagra compact crankset I know of is Hollowtech II, and needs the dedicated external BB cups. The Sugino bb won't work, unless I misunderstood something... I have a n 08 Conquest Pro and LOVE it...sold my road frame and will ride the Redline with 23 c tires in the spring/summer. enjoy!

the sugino BB has external cups and takes the same tool as the shimano bottom brackets. I was told they are compatible, do I need a new bottom bracket for sure?

A pair of the lower priced eggbeater pedals.

Apparently no, I was unaware Sugino made an external BB! Have a great time with the build.
