Okay, you all know Vertical Bob and his quest for climbing all the heck over every mountain he can get on. Well, what you may not have known is that he had a mission (incredible goal) this year to complete a vertical double metric. I think he said 660,000 feet of climbing (correct me, Bob, if I'm wrong!) in ONE year. Yup, he did, yes he did!!!! TODAY, he met that goal on Mt. Badly. Congrats, Bob! You did just great and the smile on your face in the pic I've posted shows how satisfied you feel (and rightfully so). Good job, buddy. :)

That was an incredible goal and I'm honored that I was riding with you I you passed that mark.
Now the question is, how many more feet of climbing will VB climb before the end of the year? I'm sure it will be a record that will be hard to beat.

Thanks everyone for your nice words, that makes the effort seem a little easier.:) This year has been probably my best ever, it's a good thing cause I aint getting any younger. One thing that has changed over the years that I have been doing a vertical century is my riding partners. Through this forum I have met many willing riders to share the rides I do each week in the glorious mountains of So. Cal. The company and friendship has been a really bright spot that has given me the strength to carry on when times got hard. When I think back to all the rides in the San Gabriels this year and the friends who were out there with me it really brings a warm glow. We had some great times up there. I also, with the encouragement of this forum, expanded my horrizons a bit. Riding the BA preivew and Tour de Francis in the Redlands area and I even took my bike to the Sierras for the first time. Probably the highlight of the year was my excursion up to Lone Pine to climb up to Horseshoe Meadows, wow now that's a climb. I did Whitney Portal a couple of times and even the Bristlecone climb from Big Pines as well. You have to go a lot of places to climb 125 miles straight up. Without a doubt the biggest gain as a result of my quest has been all the new friends I've made. I could not have done this without you. V.B.

Wow, to have that mission and goal in the first place is quite the laying down the gauntlet to one's self. Then you accomplished your goal! Very nice. Congratulations!

Wow - congratulations and many more of 'em.
Any advice for me? I live on a flat sandy island - our mountain (Jebel Dukhan, which translates as "Misty Hill") is an impressive 150 meters high. Sometimes I can climb it all in one go, from bottom to top all in the same day:D
But in 2 years time I'm going to retire with my tandem companion to Santa Cruz CA, and then want to spend as much time as possible in the Coastal hills and the Sierra foothills. Sonara Pass is a target!
Very well done, it's inspirational

Actually that's 125 miles of vertical gain spread out over 6500 miles so far for the year.
:)
125 miles of vertical in 6500 miles = 1.92% average, but then you must consider that all those rides ended up in the same place he started so you have to double that average so you're looking at an average climb for every mile riding of 3.84% ZOWIES..... and then you factor in how much of it was over a mile up in elevation.... makes me tired thinking about it.... way to go VB!!!! btw- you did my favorite "all time ride"- the Bristlecone

Very well done, it's inspirational Lets see, 150 meters =about 500 ft so for an average Saturday ride you would need to climb the Misty Hill 18-20 times:) I guess you will have to wait till you move to Santa Cruz to train in the hills but I'm sure once there you can find plenty of places to climb. Let me know in a couple of years and maybe we could attempt Sonora Pass. I've been over that in a car
