Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - why did i super glue bb's into the heads of my stem bolts and how do i get them out?

lolol

did you try goofoff or some superglue eating chemical

huffing that ish will help you recreate the mindstate in which you decided to do this

Try Acetone

BTW. Nice avatar :)

yeah acetone will take it right out.
did you think theyd be easy to get out? thats the whole point of them, right?

griffin_
11-24-07, 06:39 PM
acetone only get the stuff on top, there is glue under the bb's too

i'm gonna have to drll the ****ers out, o something

deathhare
11-24-07, 06:40 PM
let it soak in for a bit?
nail polish remover works too. its probably mostly acetone anyway.

how did you fit multiple bottom brackets into you stem bolts?

Marrock

You're supposed to use hot glue, not super glue.

That way you can dig them out with an awl or something.

Can you melt the glue? Maybe try applying heat...

actually, a lot of people use super glue.

What are 'bb's' ?

ball bearings. some people put ball bearings in the hole of their stem bolt as to deter theft. usually people put wax in there to hold em in. Griffin used super glue.

Did you use BB gun BBs? They're generally a softer material than steel so drilling them out won't be that hard.
If you used steel BBs, then take a hammer and punch and wail directly on top of the bearing. The glue is a really brittle acrylic, so a sharp enough impact should be able to shatter the bond. Good luck.

super glue reactivates when it it heated. Try using a small torch or a pencil torch, it will give enough heat to liquefy the super glue but not enough heat to distort the aluminum.

No it doesn't. The action of the super glue is partl solvent evaporation and part chemical reaction (acetylation?). No amount of heat will "reactivate" it, but it may burn it off enough to get the bb out.

what exactly would be the correct way to do this?

helloamerican
11-24-07, 11:26 PM
frankly, i deserve a bit of criticism

why? i was thinking about doing the same thing. things disolve super glue but either way i don't really know how this is the end of the world? you really can't macgyver a way to get them out? super glue isn't forged steel after all.... acetone should do it... also it's a shot in the dark, i've never tried it and in all likelyhood you may create a bomb, but if acetone doesn't do it maybe a small amount of some paint thinner would. Thats the only thing i could think of that disolves things of that nature more than acetone that isn't a serious acid that might hurt the metal.

disclaimer: helloamerican takes no responsibility for damages to your bike due to his suggestion

also for the yokel that said hot glue.... pretty sure i could take a lighter and a pocket knife to that and have it out in less than a minute.... so, that sucks.

I'm not a yokel, asshat, I'm just passing along info I've picked up along the way, I lay no claims to either it's efficacy or it's veracity.

The idea is not to make it impossible to get the bb out but to slow anyone down that may be trying to steal components.

As for killing the super glue, any of the suggestions given would work, just be careful with the acetone and paint thinner unless you were planning on stripping the frame anyway.

They do make special solvents just for superglue, check in places that sell the stuff (useful if you stick your fingers together, for example). Seeing as how nail polish remover has acetone, I doubt it works on superglue.

Loosen the bolt and give it a few good wacks with a hammer

griffin_

the nail polish remover (with acetone) has not been very helpful so far

wroomwroomoops
11-25-07, 11:33 AM
Put a drop of paint thinner in the bolt and burn it. Carbonized glue should be brittle and does not have anymore sticking action. Repeat a few times until desired result is achieved. This way you may salvage the cap.

That, or use a strong CO2 laser to heat the bb.

The whole point of the bb was to make it impossible to loosen the bolt, duuhhhh!!!

What type/make of superglue did you use, if you recall?

Go to a hobby store and buy "CA deponder" CA is the short version of the proper name for "super glue" Debonder will sovle your problem.

i used a hammer and really sharp drill bit (one that drills holes in wood) and just banged it in to wedge the guys out.

pretty simple if you have the right tool

11-25-07, 06:41 PM
If you decide to vaporize the glue in any way do it in an open area and use eye protection, that stuff will get in your eyes nose and throat and then youll know what irratation is! ;)

A solution my brother came up with (i take no credit for this one and you shouldn't either) was melting some Lead in there And just use a pencil torch and a solder sucker to get that business out of there, and what ever remains wouldn't stop you getting an allen in there. I have not tired it yet but its an neat concept
