Bicycle Mechanics - Carbon flat top handlebars, how difficult will it be to reroute

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

the brake cables on my Tarmac to accommodate FSA wing handlebars?

Also, are there other similar carbon flat top handlebars that don't require that the cables run through the handlebars? I like the feel of the FSA wings but I wouldn't mind finding something cheaper and that requires less work to install.

I have FSA Wing Pro bars on one bike and the cables don't run "though" the bars, they run in a groove outside the bars and under the bar tape just like any other bar. They were no more difficult to install than any other make I've used. In fact, mine are on a bike with Campy Ergo brifters so there are four cables to run under the tape and it was not a problem.

Deda Electa. They have a beautiful and simple to use set of tubes under the bar to run the cables through. I also use Campagnolo and they are 100 times easier to set up than the FSA bars I used previously.

Thanks for the help HillRider, since I've only seen them online it looked like the cables ran through the bar like they do on the top tube of my Tarmac.

I see these handlebars have a small insert area in the front, this is was I was thinking was a tube that runs inside the bars.

These are the carbon versions so I don't know how the cables are run. My Aluminum Wing Pros run the cables externally.

In any event, running the housing through guide tubes should be no problem.

I used these bars for 2007. I use Campagnolo. The cables go into the bar by the lever and exit where you see the grommit in the picture. They were a major PITA to set up (follow the included instructions). Also, since Campagnolo cable housings are so stiff, I felt a bit of push from the cables, inside the bar, wanting to straighten out. After a few minutes on the bike I got used to it and never noticed it again but I thought it was weird.

I have gone back to the DEDA ELECTA bar. I like the bend better and the cables run through a tube that is attached to the underside of the bar. They were a breeze to set up and are lighter than the FSA bars.

Did you run both the brake and shift cable housing through the tunnels on each side of the bars?
