Southern California - Happy New Year Charity Ride -- Sat, January 12, 2008

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I didn't have a chance to log-on until now.
I just want to send my gratitude to Joy and the rest of the support riders. It was a fun ride. I was very happy that I made it back in reasonable time. :-)
It was definitely memorable experience. So much so that I decided to do a recovery ride with Sally the next day at Rose Bowl and riding up and down on Lida street.

Cheers.

Wow! That's enough to get those Zipp 404s you've been wanting. Maybe there really is something to this "charity" thing.

You better believe it, Dan. Next ride? Mama gets a Powertap!!!!

BTW, this ride had nothing to do with the Cervelos I was test riding on Sunday. ;)

That Lincoln Towncar was driven by a DIVA. She just don't give a . . . about you.

Shame on you for trying to soil the expression DIVA. It is already reserved for female cyclists of rare talent, Bro. Never anybody driving a car...;) :)

The license plate was "DIVA 68" (I think it was 68)

I didn't see who was driving but I did see the car speed through each direction.

It may be worth pursuing if anyone else can confirm if it was DIVA 68

It was DIVA and some number involving an "8". Limo would explain why the car came back down the hill while we were working on the flat.

I agree, esp. if it will help keep careless drivers off the road and cyclists safer in the future. :o
I didn't witness the incident (or the car) but if anyone can confirm the details I can report it.

From their FAQs:
Who do I contact if I was unsatisfied with the service?
Call the Customer Service department to discuss the issue. We will document the issue, gather any additional information necessary, and quickly respond with a proposed solution.

Yeah, their proposed solution is a free ride up Latigo!

MY FINAL POST TO THIS INCREDIBLY-LONG THREAD:

*********************************************

January 18, 2008

Rover Rescue/LACBC
Address

Dear XXXX,

Last week, members of BikeForums.net (So. California) converged in Malibu for a ride through the Santa Monica Mountains. This was not an unusual occurrence. Ride organizers (including myself) have planned rides before from San Diego to Santa Barbara. However, since ride organization takes more than a little time and effort, last month I decided to offer up a challenge to BikeForum riders: Let’s do a ride for charity.
The response was overwhelmingly positive. BikeForum members voted on the charities of their choice, and I am happy to say that yours was one of the two organizations selected.
On January 12, 2008, I and almost 60 cyclists took off for a 50-mile ride up Latigo Canyon Road. With the indispensible help of my ride leader and sweepers (Steve H., Greg O., Herb M. and Jim T.), the ride was a rousing success. With about 5000 feet of elevation gain, it was a challenging course for most of the group and a first-time experience for many. Not only did the riders have a great time and contribute to the donation box, but many others who could not ride still sent in money.
Enclosed is our donation of ($950.00/$847.00). I know it will be put to great use. We all wish you the best of luck in your worthy cause.

Sincerely,

Joy A.
and the rest of BikeForums.net (So. Calif)

Thanks to everyone who made it happen, esp. Herb, Steve, Greg and Jim. BF members are a naturally supportive bunch, but I'd also like to give additional thanks to two unsung guys: Phil (Extort) and Mark (Efficiency). On numerous BF rides (not just this one) I always see you guys at the back, assisting with flats, pacing slower riders and generally being welcoming to newcomers – when you're not splitting lanes at 20mph, of course. Your help hasn't gone unnoticed!

And thanks to everyone who couldn't ride but donated anyway, to Luwin for the $20 gift certificates, the guys who brought extra water, and all the additional offers to help. You are an awesome bunch of people I am proud to call friends.

Total amount raised: $1797.00
If you would like to know more about the two organizations or make additional donations, please contact them directly:
Rover Rescue (http://www.roverrescue.com/)
Los Angeles Co. Bicycle Coalition (http://labike.org/).

This chapter is now closed... See you at the next ride!!!! :)
