Just another example of Cipollini being a dick. He could have rode a bit and dropped out. At least his teammates could have ridden then.

That is total crap. They made room for 22 teams. They claim they dropped other teams to allow Vacanze to ride. Now that Vacanze isnt riding, they lower the number of teams to 21??? What happened to the suppossed teams that they had passed over? If they dont have another team to fill the 22nd slot, then they should let Vacanze ride without Cipo.

It seems that the Vuelta organizers are doing some strange things with the number of teams. Just last year, they were talking about totally changing the format, starting with two groups of 18 teams (not sure on the number, but it was large), who would ride the first week in a qualifier format. After the first week, the best teams would continue in the traditional format. Needless to say, the idea was nixed when none of the team managers wanted to play that way.
To me, it looks like they're trying to include more teams/riders in the Vuelta, to make it more competitive. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but how can a lower division team compete with the likes of Fassa, ONCE, USPS, Saeco, etc.? Or, do they think that a lower division team is better than Domina Vacanze without Cipo? No matter what Cipo does, there are guys on Domina who would still contest sprints or even maybe mix it up in a breakaway, so I think the team still deserves a shot.
PS: for the sake of argument, let's say Cipo turned down the Vuelta in order to train for the Worlds (which is his claim). As much as I like him, does he really think he has a realistic chance of winning or helping on a hilly course in Hamilton?

The race organizers told the team to bring Cipo or don't come at all. Simple as that.
