General Cycling Discussion - Oh, no, yet ANOTHER Rivendell post?

Only so this won't get lost at the bottom of the long and tedious Rivendell thread already hanging around here:

For what it's worth, I was an adult cyclist for more than 30 years, enthusiastic in spurts but never really comfortable or at ease on my bikes (even though I averaged 3000-4000 miles a year in a place with a seven-month season). When I finally decided I could afford a midlife crisis, I bought an Atlantis frame and fork and built it up pretty much as Grant recommended. I was instantly (I mean instantly, first ride) more comfortable than I'd ever been, and within a few months set a PR for 50 miles at age 58 because I was able to stay on the bike longer.
I've since bought a used Rambouillet (an ex shop demo w/105 components), and it has all the advantages of the Atlantis in addition to being a little lighter and faster. All my dealings with the company have been absolutely unbeatable, they replaced a wheel I tacoed without an instant of hassle even though I admitted it was my fault, and Grant personally has answered several questions and responded to e-mails. If you think Rivendell or Grant are talking down to you, as somebody said, consider the possibility that maybe he's right. I know he was in my case.

I like the bikes, and Grant has some good ideas, but he's too close-minded IMO.

I'm an original Bridgestone owner and I appreciate what Grant has to say. Right now his products don't really suit my needs.

Just because someone is right does not mean they need to talk down to another. I have worked the repair end of retail(several fields) for more than twenty years. I have found that being a supercillious ass does neither party any good.

No more seriously, Grant knows what he is talking about, so much is obvious. You might not like what he has to say or what he says, but i am sure some people here have heard of and appreciate the first amendment. It protects Grant and also the critics of Grant.

But i for one am glad he speaks up, even one of stories (and there are thousands) as the one above justify him saying what he says.

@ Velo Dog, i am very glad for you man! It is a Triumph and a happy thing when cycling/a bike really suddenly just 'works' for you.

If you really want to hear people talking down to others, go the Road Forum. It's pretty much their way or no way. Tell them you like steel and it ends up a 10 page flame about what dinosaur you are. Suggest riding a group lower than Ultegra or Chorus and you'll be considered very pedestrian.

Grant Peterson doesn't talk down to anyone. He's just pointing out that the market is driven what's new, not what's usefull.
