My birthday was the 21st but with all the Tday activities we have been able to get in no more than some 40 milers. Today Red Rider and I were introduced to Mt Diablo for our first Tandem ride up the mountain. I have been driving up this mountain for several years as it is our local hang gliding site but have never pedaled up. Thanks to Smoooth and Sassy we finally tried it out. I have always had a lot of respect for those that do this and today I finally found out just exactly what it is all about.

We started out from Sassy's house and went up the south side. We took a break at the junction and then on to Juniper. We took another little break then up the last 1.5 miles. Smoooth and Sassy are very strong climbers and they dialed it back to stay with us. Our goal was just to make it to the top. To be honest we made it all the way to half way up "the wall" and our legs just gave out so we walked up the last 100 ft of road and 50 ft of elevation.:o Here is the profile

The wall calculated out to right at 18% grade. Now that we know what to expect, next time we will make it all the way. Tandem climbing is very different than singles and I am in awe of how well S & S made it look so easy. The descent was awesome. We took it easy enough but my hands and feet were fairly numb with cold at the end. It was great to pedal again.

All this was topped off by a great lunch at the Pyramid Brewing Company where S & S treated us to lunch for my Birthday.

Thanks G & M. You guys are the greatest. We want to do it again and hope we can do it a bit faster and not slow you guys down so much. Enjoy Maui.:)

Wow. It was way overcast today. But it looks like you had fun anyway.
Missed you on the Saturday NorCal ride.

Happy birthday. I will be riding Mt Diablo this year for my annual snow break. I make a trip out to CA each mid winter to get a break from the snow and cold of Colorado. Usually stay in the Bay Area and get a great week of road and cross riding without the snow and sub Zero temps. My riding buddy has suggested the ride this year. Thanks for the motivational photos.

Like I've said before, you never see folks smiling like that in an SUV.

Great to ride with you guys today!

We will post some pics later. Got to hit the sack for the early rise tomorrow for our trip to Maui.

About the ride, even though we could have gone faster, we still got a great workout. Staying in the middle ring and doing those leg presses - we both feel our legs tonight  It is not possible to ride the mountain and not get a great workout ;)

What really makes today special - it is the first time we have ridden with another tandem to the top - that was epic !! Gotta do that again in the near future, maybe coax Hermes and Velodiva out as well...

We will keep you guys up to date on our riding adventures in Maui. Haleakula here we come.

Happy Birthday Chris!! :D

It is interesting to compare the profiles of the South and North sides. We did the North on the descent. It is about 1 mile longer and a little harder profile.

OMG - I'm toast. I really did read 18% grade on this thread...lol! Am going to try my first (hopeful) ascent up the Diablo this Saturday. Must have frostbite of the brain...

Its hard but doable. Its only for a short distance and the second you start you can see the end. There is even a sign at the top, visible from the start of the climb. Good luck on your climb. My first one required me to forrest gump the last part. I just told myself. "Gone this far, might as well keep going". worked, albeit, with the worst possible form and a cateye that had stopped reading both cadence and speed.. but whatever, I'm still new, and I have chicken legs :)

Pace yourself and save some for the end. Dress for the descent...Skull cap, booties, long fingered wind proof gloves and wind proof clothes. Descending Diablo and Hamilton in the cold is similar to downhill skiing. It is mostly coasting and braking for a long time. Have fun.

FYI, the "Summit Wall" is 90 full revolutions in a 39x27. I never look up, it's too depressing, I just stare at my front wheel and count the revs.
