Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Once you've had fixie, do you go back?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

after two years and 10000 miles commuting with gears, i found myself using only one gear. i only shifted once every six months or so as my stamina increased. once i got to the gear that skips back and forth over bumps it was time for a change. i built a fixie from a pawn shop find. i quit riding the geared bike. now that bike is fixed too, and is about to be my new mountain bike. i'm always doing 20mph plus on the road and i smoke spandex wearing roadies like blunts. both of my bikes are about 6lbs lighter and i'll never shift again....

"The ASC is the rarest and most sought-after Sturmey-Archer hub. I have no idea where you can find one, so please don't bother asking. The last one I know of changing hands was sold on eBay for over $300 in May 1999."
:(
Sturmey-Archer needs to get in bed with Bikes Direct and market this thing.
No, but close. S-A is remaking the hub. Last I read they're currently gearing up to produce some prototypes. If you do some searching there's a mailing list you can get on for updates.

haha.
The only place I ride fixed these days is the track, or while doing cyclocross (FUNFUNFUNFUNFUN!!!). If I want to get around the city in a flash I'm on a geared bike.

I'm building my first roadie right now. It'll be the first time in 3 years I'll be on gears. But I've got a few looooooooong rides coming up next year (europe here I come) and I'd like to have a geared for that.

take a nice big whiff of the air next time you drive through tillamook and reassess your love
And then stop for free samples and ice-cream! God bless that place! many a hungry drive down 101 has been saved in Tillamook!

i ride fixed during polo. i like the maneuverability of the lower gear inch trackstand.
but my knees are shot. i couldn't do something in the 70's or 80's as a commuter. and brakeless!!?? forgetaboudit
so i'm on my old 21speed trek hybrid, lappin up the taunts and jokes at my nasty ass bike.
*sigh*
this forum has grown up a lot in the past few years.
i love your hybrid. that thing is nasssty.

yeah, i have about 3 bikes, 2 of which both have derailleurs
i really wish we could purge the word "fixie" from the forums...
I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one... that term, which I won't even use, irritates the **** out of me. Stupid, I know...
I rode a fixed-gear almost exclusively for... 10 years or so (outside of tooling around on an old Redline BMX and a big*** 60s Columbia cruiser from time-to-time for kicks), and it me a long time to get used to riding a multispeed bicycle again, but I did it... then I broke a spoke and was too lazy to fix it; so I'm back on my track bike again. Now of course I've got multispeed bikes back in my blood and am kicking myself for not bringing it with me; I keep pestering my wife to cram it into her little car and bring it to me, thus far no luck.

1 '80s roadie, 1 80's roadie converted to fixed.
I'll ride either depending on the ride. The first mile on one or the other always feels really weird.
The longer, faster rides get gears.... so I won't get dropped. Anything under 30, or not blazing fast gets the fixed gear. Once I'm in better shape... the fixed gear will come out to play more often. Right now it's geared for the stroll to work... 45ish/17. Basically, I'm pretty buzzy on the 20+mph pacelines. But I can sprint it to upper 20s without a problem as long as it's not held for too long.
I won't go completely fixed... but I'll definatly lean more towards it.

i ride fixed probably 95% of the time. i ride my ten speed when i want a bike with fenders, a rack a bell, or a more upright position.

Oh, I agree totally.
Otherwise, how are the old timers like me supposed to have any chance of somehow not offending the hipsters? I mean, it's in the DESCRIPTION!
Incidentally, I am glad that so many people are indifferent to what others ride...understanding that it really doesn't affect them. However, sometimes those very same people are adamantly against the use of a word describing what other ride...as though it really does affect them!!!

Someone needs to invent a derailleur-equipped fixed gear bike. Then you would always have the right gear, and the zen-one-with-the-bike-blah-blah-blah feel of fixed, all in one.
this (http://sheldonbrown.com/asc.html) is about as close as you can get
maybe some other internally geared hub (8-speed?); but, i certainly wouldn't know
derail + fix alone sounds pretty sketchy to me

gotta love some Old Gregg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Y8p8lQWasA)
I got into fixed gear riding lured by the idea that conversions would be inexpensive, and my buddy was into it. I'd never even ridden a road bike before but I quickly became obsessed with the clean lines and lack of cables found on peoples' fixies.
I like riding them, but I think I like the look more than the experience. I'm riding a geared mountain bike for exercise these days and haven't really hankered for fewer gears. What I miss is the fact that my fix-conversion was 19 lbs.
edit Oops, I see that we aren't really discussing fixed gear bikes any more, sorry for the late post!

i flipped my back wheel and went freewheelin tonight. it was terrible. my legs feel all uncertain and jiggly. plus i do not like braking with my hands by themselves. i like letting my weight do some of the work. i will probably remove the freewheel.
i will probably want gears and freewheels again when i turn 45 or so.

Having to ride only single speed bikes when growing up I find one speed comfortable and "normal". Switching to fixed gear made it feel even better, and costing now seems strange and unnatural (not that there is anything wrong with it, of course).
I love any kind of bikes, even the ones that my colleges at a bike shop call "pieces of shchit", and would probably ride non fixed at some point.
At the moment I enjoy riding fixed.
