DiNotte Lighting USA Monthly Newsletter

As the year comes to a close we have to thank all of our customers for a great year. DiNotte Lighting has always worked hard to deliver quality LED lights with battery solutions that won't break the bank and our customers caught onto our philosophy quickly.

Cyclists, as you know are some of the toughest people to find gifts for. Most of us have such specific wants that it's difficult to find the right gift for a spouse or riding partner.

We received a number of emails from spouses, significant others and parents of cyclists asking what they should get as a gift. We threw this idea around the office for a while and ended up with this suggestion:

Buy the person you are shopping for something they wouldn't purchase for themselves!

Considering our taillight is such a fabulous product that most consider a luxury it's time to get one for the person who needs a powerful taillight and won't purchase one for themselves.

Lithium-ion powered taillight with battery and one charger - This taillight is a great light for those who want the long run times of lithium ion batteries and would rather not deal with AA style batteries. The system includes light engine, a single 2 cell (aka mini) battery with run time ranging from 4-32 hours), charger, taillight mount, straps, extension cable, and spare o-rings for the taillight and taillight mount. 165.00 + shipping. International customer MUST choose express shipping.

Special # 2

AA powered taillight (batteries and charger deleted) - includes light engine, battery bag, battery holder, taillight mount, straps and spare o-rings for the light and taillight mount. 110.00 + shipping. International customers MUST choose express shipping.

Special 3
Lithium ion powered AMBER DATYIME RUNNING LIGHT with a single 2 cell (aka mini) battery and charger. This headlight is a great daytime light for being seen in day, dusk and foul weather. The system includes Amber light engine, 2 cell battery with run time ranging from 4-32 hours), charger, taillight mount (as many recumbent riders use this as a headlight), straps, extension cable, and spare o-rings for the taillight and taillight mount. 164.00 + shipping. International orders MUST choose express mail.

The sale starts tonight and will run through the week. Our weekend sale items are on a first come, first served basis with NO rain checks, so please understand if we run out of stock.

We will put a tremendous amount of detail regarding these lights in the item detail. Unfortunately we cannot handle the phone calls and email traffic of such a sale, so please, no phone calls and please refrain from asking questions via email about the items on sale.

Our sale items will be in a special section of the website. First, go to the website www.dinottelighting.com and click on the online store. The sale items will be in the lower right hand corner where we usually put our extreme lighting products. Don't miss this one!

Our last weekend special was a big hit, but many of our customers do not have the opportunity to check their emails during the weekend, so we have opened this sale for the week while supplies last.

Thanks again for a great year.

Sincerely,
The DiNotte Lighting Staff

Hmm, as a SuperFlash user it'll take some convincing that I need this upgrade.

I'm a SuperFlash owner, thinking it was all that. Then I got the Dinotte taillight. It is ALL that.

Can you run the tail lite on med or low like the headlight? How bright is it? I have the headlight and love it, and am thinking of getting the tail light, but would like to get more life out of the batteries.

I have a SuperFlash and recently saw a Dinotte tail light up close (fellow bike commuter). The SuperFlash is bright, lightweight, and is a great light for the money. Glad I have one. The Dinotte is IMPOSSIBLE TO NOT SEE. I've been wishing I'd bought a taillight when I purchased the headlight during their last sale. Just placed the order. :)

well, that's just it, I know from reading this forum that it's bright, but is it really SO good as to justify spending $110 on an AA powered rear light?

All of the modes available on the headlight are also available on the taillight and on the amber daytime light; high, medium, low, plus three flashing modes.

I've been on the fence about the tail light but haven't gotten one for a couple of reasons, one reason being that I am not convinced that having a bright rear light is all that important. I notice that I'm rarely invisible with a good headlight, but it's rare that I'll find someone can't see me from behind.

Is a bright rear light that important? How common is it to get hit from the rear?

I am also on the fence on this one. I have a 200L for the front, and it is justified because it lets me see. It seems like a person could get a real freakin' bright tailight for less than $100. I don't need to see in back so I don't see why I need that level of technology in a taillight. However, I have noticed that the more light I have the more secure I feel when I'm out alone in the dark.

I posted this message on the commuting forum, but this forum gets more discussion about lighting, so here it is again:

So how are you supposed to mount a DiNotte tail-light to your bike if you can't use the seatpost? My bike has a Carradice Barley seatbag to carry my gear, and it makes the seatpost totally unusable for mounting tail-lights. I've mounted my Planet Bike Superflash to one of the chain stays, and I've got another tail-light attached to the rear strap on the Barley. But I can't see a simple way to mount the DiNotte if you don't have a seatpost or a rear rack.

What I've noticed is that drivers pass me at lower speed and with more clearance when I'm rockin' the DiNotte. On a two-lane, rather than try to squeeze by me, most of the time they will wait until a break in oncoming traffic to pull around. It's amazing.

Running a pair of Cat-Eyes, sure they could see me, and I never got hit, but it didn't change their behavior.

The DiNotte is bright enough to do the same thing during the day too. In other words, it's not just a nightime taillight.

Check out James' blog for lots of lighting info, including some mounting ideas.

Sorry, I can't find the specifric writeup on how to mount the tail-light, but it's there someplace. :o

Basically, the Dinotte will go anywhere you can put a horizontal piece of PVC or other tubing of similar diameter. I used a short section of plastic conduit to mount the light to the seat bag.

There is a certain mysticism going on with the tail light also. It is called The Dinotte Effect: Motorists approaching this bright, red glowing star are mesmerized. It not so subtly convinces them to move left 3 feet until they are passing said spheroid safely. Once out of the influence of this light, they realize that they just passed a bicycle and then proceed to drive foolishly again.

In all seriousness, once I got a Dinotte tail light, even the SuperFlash seems so, well, impotent.

If you're not convinced, then don't get one. Its not our job to do that. If you really want to know, then do some research as many others on here have already written about it.

Without fancy mounts (or major jerry-rigging) it can be tricky with a seatbag. I lucked out because the Topeak bag I use has elastic loops underneath (designed to hold a minipump) that the light can slip into. Otherwise, you'll have to kludge a mount that can grab onto the slimmer seatstays. Maybe you can jerry-rig off of the SF mount?

I agree, it is not our job to convince you to get one of these. However, it's fun to sound off and brag on this light. I too was unsure before I spent the money on the dinotte tail light. After one month of having cars swerve 4 feet each time they pass, and riding with the feeling that I know they see me, that is worth the money many times over. It really is amazing. One car stopped and said to me "Why are you shining a laser beam in my eyes!"

I also use two planet bike SF's but when I used them alone I never got the road respect that I do now. It's a steep plunge to spend the money, however the sale price is on now. If you buy, I do not believe you will have any post cognitive dissonance.

Whether collisions are common or not, it's actually helpful to approaching drivers if they can see you sooner and realize that you're not a car, stoplight, reflection from a parked car, etc. If they can spot you farther back, they won't have to get in a tizzy trying to look for a way to go around and give plenty of room.

Some drivers buzz cyclists regularly, but most don't want to, and if they have more time to shift to the side safely, they'll take it. A brighter light gives them more time.

Here's your mount. I've got several hundred miles on this one. It's a very flexy setup, but the light is low mass so all is well
